Al's Oven-Baked Swiss Steak

List of Ingredients
-
1 pound boneless beef round steak
-
½ teaspoon seasoned salt (such as Lawry's)
-
½ teaspoon salt
-
¼ teaspoon ground black pepper
-
1 tablespoon all-purpose flour, or as needed
-
¼ cup vegetable oil
-
1 (14.5 ounce) can stewed tomatoes
-
1 medium onion, chopped
-
1 green bell pepper, chopped
-
½ cup chopped carrots
-
¼ cup chopped celery
-
¼ cup beef broth
-
2 cloves garlic, minced
-
1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
-
¼ teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
-
¼ cup shredded sharp Cheddar cheese
Instructions
-
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Lightly grease a shallow baking dish.
-
Cut the beef into four even pieces and pound each one to about 1/4-inch thickness. Season with seasoned salt, regular salt, and black pepper, then dust each piece with about 1 tablespoon of flour.
-
Heat oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add the beef and cook for 3 to 5 minutes on each side until browned. Transfer the beef to the prepared baking dish, keeping the drippings in the skillet.
-
In the same skillet, combine tomatoes, onion, green bell pepper, carrots, celery, beef broth, garlic, 1 tablespoon of flour, and Worcestershire sauce. Bring to a boil, then cook and stir for 2 minutes. Pour this mixture over the beef and cover the dish with aluminum foil.
-
Bake the beef in the preheated oven for about 1 1/2 hours, or until the beef is tender. Sprinkle cheese over the beef and return it to the oven, uncovered, for an additional 3 to 5 minutes until the cheese melts.
