Create Dairy Queen-Inspired Blizzards at Home with This Clever Trick

While scrolling through my Instagram feed and watching endless food videos, I discovered a brilliant hack for making a Dairy Queen-style Blizzard at home. I knew right away I had to try it, because not only am I a fan of their Blizzards, but I also love trying out hacks that let me recreate favorite restaurant treats whenever a craving strikes.
So, did it work? The short answer is yes. The process was so simple, required almost no ingredients, and gave me an excuse to indulge in ice cream and Oreos, so even if it hadn’t perfectly mimicked a Blizzard, it still would have been a win.
To my delight, this homemade Blizzard tasted exactly like the ones from Dairy Queen—if not even better. It had the perfect mix of creamy texture, somewhere between hard ice cream and soft serve, with hints of vanilla bean and cookies and cream, plus just the right crunch from the mix-ins. The best part? You get to control the amount of mix-ins, so you can go light or extra heavy. And with no limits on the serving size, you can make a Blizzard as big as you want.
How to Make a Dairy Queen Blizzard at Home
The hack is super easy, and you only need two ingredients: vanilla ice cream and Oreos. Of course, if you're making the Oreo Cookie Blizzard like I did, but you can also swap out the Oreos for other candy options like Reese’s, or even marshmallows and graham crackers for a S’mores Blizzard.
You'll only need one key tool: a mixer. Ideally, you want a stand mixer like a KitchenAid, but if your ice cream is soft enough, a handheld electric mixer will do the job. To make this Blizzard, just blend the ice cream until it’s soft and reaches a soft-serve-like texture. Once it’s smooth, add in the Oreos and continue mixing until they’re crushed and well combined with the ice cream.
Ingredients:
- 1 container Breyers vanilla ice cream (or any preferred ice cream)
- Oreos
Instructions:
- Chill the mixing bowl in the freezer for 10 minutes. Once chilled, add the ice cream to the bowl and return it to the mixer.
- Mix the ice cream on medium speed until smooth but still firm, about 1 minute. Add the Oreos and continue mixing until they’re crushed and fully incorporated, another minute.
- Serve your homemade Blizzard with extra crumbled Oreos on top, if desired.
Recipe Variations
As mentioned earlier, you can easily swap the Oreos for other candies or ingredients. Here are some creative combinations to try:
- Vanilla ice cream with pretzels, caramel, and chocolate
- Strawberry ice cream with graham crackers
- Peanut butter ice cream with puppy chow
- Vanilla ice cream with chocolate fudge
