Crispy BBQ Tofu Strips

1 (16 ounce) package extra firm tofu

3 tablespoons olive oil

1 egg white

1 tablespoon barbeque sauce

1 cup all-purpose flour

1 teaspoon salt

Instructions

Drain the tofu and cut it into strips. Place it in a plastic bag or container and freeze overnight to give it a firmer, meatier texture. Once frozen, thaw and blot the tofu with paper towels to remove excess moisture.

Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. In a small bowl, whisk together egg whites and 1 tablespoon of BBQ sauce. In another bowl, mix flour, salt, and pepper. Dip each tofu strip into the egg mixture, then coat with the flour mixture, shaking off any excess. Fry the tofu in the hot oil for about 1 minute on each side, or until golden and crispy. Cook in batches to avoid overcrowding the pan. Once done, remove and place on paper towels to drain and cool.

Preheat the broiler in your oven. Brush the tofu strips with additional BBQ sauce and let them marinate while the broiler heats up. Arrange the tofu on a broiler pan or a wire rack placed over a baking sheet for best results.

Position the oven rack about 6 inches from the heat. Broil the tofu for 5 minutes on each side, or until the tofu is crispy and browned. Keep a close eye on them to prevent burning. Serve warm with extra BBQ sauce for dipping.
