Fry Bread Tacos II: A Crispy Delight
Ingredients for the Tacos
Toppings to Add:
-
1 (15.5 ounce) can pinto beans, with liquid
-
½ cup picante sauce, divided
-
1 pound ground beef
-
1 (1.25 ounce) package taco seasoning mix
How to Make the Fry Bread:
-
2 cups all-purpose flour, or more as needed
-
1 tablespoon baking powder
-
1 teaspoon salt
-
1 cup milk
-
oil for frying
-
2 cups shredded iceberg lettuce
-
1 cup shredded Cheddar cheese
Instructions
In a small saucepan over low heat, combine beans and 2 tablespoons of picante sauce. Heat through for about 5 minutes, stirring occasionally.
In a large skillet over medium-high heat, cook ground beef with taco seasoning until browned, about 5 to 8 minutes. Cover and keep warm while you prepare the fry bread.
In a medium-sized bowl, mix together the flour, baking powder, and salt. Add the milk and stir until a dough forms. If needed, add more flour to make the dough easier to handle.
On a floured surface, knead the dough for at least 5 minutes until smooth. Let it rest for 5 minutes. Divide the dough into 3/4 cup-sized portions, shaping them into round discs about 1/4 inch thick, with a slight indentation in the center.
Heat 1 1/2 inches of oil in a large, deep skillet until it reaches 365°F (180°C). Fry the dough in the hot oil, cooking for about 3 minutes on each side, or until golden. Drain on paper towels.
Top the fry bread with a layer of beans, ground beef, lettuce, and Cheddar cheese. Drizzle with picante sauce to finish.
