How to Clean Clams Properly
Cleaning clams is quick and simple, and it's essential if you want to avoid the unpleasantness of salty, sandy clams!

1. Avoid clams that are open, cracked, or damaged. Always unwrap them as soon as you get home so they can breathe, and store them in a cool, dry place.
2. Soak your clams in fresh water for 20 minutes just before cooking. As they filter the water, they expel saltwater and sand from their shells. After soaking, carefully remove the clams from the water, as sand will settle at the bottom of the bowl. Avoid pouring the water over them, as it will reintroduce the sand.
3. After soaking, use a stiff brush to scrub away any remaining sand, barnacles, or other ocean debris. This is the same technique used when cleaning mussels.
Now that your clams are clean, why not put them to good use and cook up something tasty?
