How to Keep Cut Watermelon Fresh for Days
As summer fades, I'm making the most of the season's fresh fruits. Personally, I like to prepare my fruit by cutting it all at once for convenience. But with watermelon, improper storage can lead to it spoiling quickly. I've learned a few tricks to keep your watermelon fresh for longer, and I'm sharing them here.
Storing Cut Watermelon
Start by thoroughly washing your watermelon to remove any bacteria. Once cleaned, cut your watermelon into pieces—how you cut it will affect how well it stores.
For Larger Watermelon Pieces
If you've opted for larger cuts like sticks or triangles, plastic wrap is your go-to tool. Wrap the exposed edges with plastic wrap before refrigerating. It's a good idea to place a dish underneath to catch any juice that may escape. This wrap keeps your watermelon fresh, prevents it from absorbing other fridge odors, and helps retain its moisture.
For Smaller Watermelon Pieces
For bite-sized cubes, an airtight container is a must. However, be sure to enjoy them soon—if left too long, they release more juice, causing them to lose their sweetness and flavor.
How Long Will Cut Watermelon Stay Fresh?
Your cut watermelon should remain fresh for about five days, depending on how it's cut and stored. To extend its shelf life, consider freezing it. Remove the rind and cut the watermelon into cubes or bite-sized pieces. Arrange the cubes on a baking sheet and freeze until firm. Once frozen, store them in an airtight container or zip-top bag for up to three months.
Frozen watermelon may soften once thawed, making it ideal for creating frozen treats like ice cream, popsicles, or other chilled desserts.
