I just discovered my microwave is long overdue for a filter change
When was the last time you checked or cleaned your microwave filters? Be honest—did you even know it had filters that need attention?
Most over-the-range microwaves come equipped with both a grease filter and a charcoal filter to reduce odors. These filters need regular care to keep the microwave running efficiently. If you're like me, you've had your microwave for over a year without ever removing or inspecting these filters.
It turns out the grease filter should be cleaned and the charcoal filter replaced every six months. Now we know!
Homeowners on TikTok and Instagram have gone viral by showing off how they clean their microwave filters. The comment sections reveal that many of us have been using our microwaves for years without realizing the filters even need cleaning or replacement.
Types of Microwave Filters
Microwaves typically have two types of filters: grease filters and charcoal filters. Both work together to keep your microwave functioning smoothly, but each serves a unique purpose.
Unsure what kind of filters your microwave uses? Check the user manual for guidance. Filter placement can vary by brand and model, and they might be located on the back wall or above/below the cooking surface.
Samsung explains that 'Countertop microwaves don't require filters, but over-the-range models always do, using at least one type.'
What Do Microwave Filters Do?
The Grease Filter
A grease filter prevents grease, dust, and other debris from entering the microwave's vent system. The exhaust fan works to circulate fresh air back into your kitchen as you cook below. If the grease filter gets clogged, the fan won't be able to effectively clean the air.
The Charcoal Filter
Charcoal filters are responsible for recirculating the air in the microwave's venting system. Their primary function is to absorb kitchen odors.
Do You Need to Replace Your Microwave Filters?
Filters are essential to maintaining your microwave's performance. Regular care ensures the appliance operates at its best and helps eliminate strong kitchen odors.
The microwave's grease filter should be cleaned monthly, unless it's physically damaged. If the filter is broken, replace it immediately to prevent grease from entering the vent system and ensure the microwave runs smoothly.
The microwave’s charcoal filter needs to be replaced regularly. Unlike the grease filter, the charcoal filter cannot be cleaned, so plan to replace it approximately every six months.
Maytag advises that microwave charcoal filters should be replaced at least every six months. However, if you cook often, check the filter every three months and replace it as needed. If you use your microwave less frequently, you may be able to wait up to seven to eight months before replacing it.
How to Clean and Replace Microwave Filters
How to Clean Grease Filters
Samsung recommends checking if your microwave has one or two grease filters. These filters are located on the bottom of the microwave and should be cleaned regularly.
First, turn off the microwave and remove the filter, which is located underneath the appliance and should pop out easily. Soak the grease filter in warm, soapy water for 10 to 15 minutes. Gently scrub with a soft sponge or dish brush. Rinse thoroughly and let it dry completely before putting it back in place.
How to Replace Charcoal Filters
Turn off the microwave. Use a screwdriver to remove the vent panel, then take out the old charcoal filter and replace it with a new one. Replacement filters are available at home improvement stores or on the manufacturer’s website.
