Michigan-Style Pasties

Ingredients List
Pastry Dough:
-
3 ½ cups all-purpose flour, sifted
-
1 ½ teaspoons salt
-
1 cup shortening
-
1 cup cold water
Filling Ingredients:
-
1 pound boneless round or chuck steak, cut into 1-inch cubes
-
2 medium potatoes, peeled and cubed
-
1 medium onion, chopped
-
1 medium carrot, diced (Optional)
-
½ cup cubed rutabaga
-
salt and pepper to taste
-
6 tablespoons margarine
Instructions
-
Prepare the dough: In a large bowl, mix flour and salt. Cut in the shortening until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Gradually add water, stirring until the dough comes together. Form into a ball, wrap in plastic wrap, and refrigerate for 30 minutes.
-
Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
-
Prepare the filling: In a bowl, combine meat, potatoes, onion, carrot, rutabaga, salt, and pepper until evenly mixed.
-
Remove dough from the fridge and divide it into six portions. Roll each portion into a ball, then flatten each into 6-inch rounds on a floured surface. Spoon about 1 cup of filling onto half of each round, and top with a tablespoon of margarine. Fold the dough over the filling and crimp the edges to seal. Use a fork to prick the tops, then place on the prepared baking sheet.
-
Bake for 1 hour in the preheated oven.
