Pam's Homemade Bierocks
Ingredients List
-
nonstick cooking spray
Dough Ingredients:
-
2 cups warm water
-
2 (.25 ounce) packages active dry yeast
-
7 cups all-purpose flour
-
½ cup white sugar
-
¼ cup margarine, softened
-
1 large egg
-
2 teaspoons salt
Filling Ingredients:
-
1 pound lean ground beef
-
6 cups shredded cabbage
-
1 cup chopped onion
-
1 teaspoon salt
-
1 teaspoon black pepper
Toppings:
-
¼ cup melted butter
Instructions
-
Lightly grease a medium-sized bowl and a baking sheet with nonstick spray. Set them aside.
-
Prepare the dough: In a large bowl, combine warm water and yeast. Let it sit for about 10 minutes until it becomes creamy.
-
Add half of the flour, sugar, margarine, egg, and salt to the yeast mixture. Beat until smooth. Then, gradually add the rest of the flour and mix by hand until the dough comes together. Place the dough in the prepared bowl, cover with foil, and refrigerate for 2 hours to overnight, or let it rise at room temperature for 1 hour.
-
While the dough is rising, make the filling: Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Brown the ground beef, stirring occasionally, for about 5 to 7 minutes. Add the cabbage, onion, salt, and pepper, and cook, stirring occasionally, over medium-low heat until the cabbage is soft, around 30 minutes. Remove from heat and allow to cool to lukewarm.
-
Punch down the dough and divide it into 20 equal pieces. Flatten each piece on a clean surface, then add about 2 tablespoons of the filling. Fold the dough over and seal the edges. Place the filled dough pieces on the prepared baking sheet and let them rise for an additional hour.
-
Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
-
Bake in the preheated oven for about 25 minutes, or until golden brown. Brush the tops with melted butter and serve while warm.
