PSA: You're Likely Washing Your Grapes Incorrectly—Here’s the Right Method

Grapes are a fridge essential—a convenient addition to fruit salads, a lunchbox snack, or just a quick handful when you need something to nibble on.
But whether you’re picking them up at the farmers market or the supermarket, don’t eat them straight away. They deserve a little care before you enjoy them.
Do You Really Need to Wash Grapes?
If you’re buying organic produce, this might not be as much of a concern, but since organic options can be pricey, not everyone goes that route. Personally, I grab the regular grapes, even if it means spending a bit more time rinsing them. Plus, who knows what kind of dirt or germs those bags might have picked up on their way from the vineyard to the store—you’ll want to wash them anyway.

When to Clean Grapes
Similar to other fruits and vegetables (like strawberries), grapes should be washed right before consumption. Washing the whole batch as soon as you get home causes excess moisture to linger, which can shorten their freshness and shelf-life.
How to Clean Grapes
Place the grapes—only the amount you plan to eat!—into a strainer or colander and rinse them with cool water, tossing them well to ensure every grape gets washed. For an extra clean batch, let them soak in cool water for 5 to 10 minutes. Some people add a couple of tablespoons of baking soda or vinegar to the water for an added cleanse. Be sure to rinse them again and gently pat dry before enjoying.
How to Store Grapes
To store grapes, ensure they are as dry as possible before placing them in a breathable bag or container with good airflow. Moisture will shorten their lifespan, so avoid excess water. Keeping the stems attached may also help them stay fresh longer.
