Texas-Style Baked Beans Recipe

Ingredients Needed
-
1 tablespoon butter, or as needed
-
2 tablespoons vegetable oil
-
1 medium red onion, diced
-
2 cloves garlic, minced, or more to taste
-
1 pound bacon, diced
-
1 medium red bell pepper, diced
-
3 medium jalapeno peppers, minced, or to taste
-
1 cup beer, or more to taste
-
1 cup barbecue sauce
-
1 cup brown sugar
-
¼ cup molasses
-
6 cups cooked pinto beans
-
1 pinch garlic salt, or to taste
-
cracked black pepper to taste
Instructions
-
Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Lightly grease a 9x13-inch baking dish with 1 tablespoon of butter.
-
Heat oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Cook onion and garlic until softened, about 5 to 7 minutes. Add bacon, bell pepper, and jalapeños, then cook until the bacon crisps up, 7 to 10 minutes.
-
In a large bowl, combine beer, barbecue sauce, brown sugar, and molasses. Add pinto beans, the bacon-onion mixture, garlic salt, and pepper. Pour the mixture into the prepared baking dish.
-
Bake in the preheated oven for about 45 minutes, or until the beans are bubbling and browned on top.
Baking on a Wood Smoker:
Preheat your smoker to a temperature between 250°F and 275°F (120°C to 135°C). Transfer the bean mixture to a greased 9x13-inch baking pan lined with aluminum foil. Place the pan in the smoker and cook for 30 minutes. Then, cover with more foil and continue to cook for 2 to 3 hours. Afterward, uncover the beans and transfer the pan to a preheated 375°F (190°C) oven to brown the beans for about 10 minutes.
