10 Sunny Destinations for Your Winter Getaway
While powdery white snow certainly brings a touch of magic to travel, the long winter nights can often make us yearn for sunshine. From the shores of Spain to the deserts of the U.S. Southwest, there are many locations that bask in warm weather even during the depths of winter.
As someone who has embraced the snowbird lifestyle—spending Thanksgiving in Türkiye and year-end holidays in the Caribbean—I can confirm that heading south is a fantastic way to enjoy those final, well-deserved PTO days. Trust me, and take advice from other Dinogo team members, and check out these 10 sun-soaked spots for your winter holiday.
1. New Zealand
- Accommodation recommendation: Flockhill
With New Zealand’s seemingly infinite array of natural wonders, it serves as a perfect holiday destination for those who love the outdoors. Elen Turner, a New Zealander and writer for Dinogo, emphasizes that some of the country's most breathtaking views are best experienced on a road trip, and its extensive EV network makes eco-friendly travel much more achievable.
Just a two-hour drive from Christchurch, you can unwind amidst the stunning Southern Alps, or venture to the southwest region of South Island to tackle one of New Zealand’s “Great Walks” in Fiordland National Park. When Christmas arrives, be ready to bring a grill for some beachside barbecuing. From December to February, daytime temperatures range from 68 to 77 degrees Fahrenheit, making picnics and coastal excursions popular during this season.

2. Florida
- Recommended accommodation: Ritz-Carlton Orlando
Disney, sun-kissed beaches, and Miami—it's no surprise that the Sunshine State ranks among the top choices for U.S. travelers seeking a domestic escape. With numerous direct flights from major hubs in Orlando and Miami, plus temperatures ranging from 60 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit, a wealth of adventures awaits. (North and central Florida tend to be cooler but rarely experience snow.) Take a leisurely walk through the Nights of Lights in St. Augustine or partake in the annual Winterfest Boat Parade in Fort Lauderdale’s waters—thankfully, you can enjoy these activities in just a light sweater.

3. Arizona
- Recommended accommodation: Andaz Scottsdale Resort & Bungalows
Visiting Southwestern landmarks like the Grand Canyon in winter is fantastic, as it sees about half the summer crowds. However, keep in mind that the park’s elevation can bring a few inches of snow each winter. For some sunshine in Arizona, consider heading to the desert, where spots like Saguaro National Park offer easily navigable trails surrounded by cacti. With so many sunny locales, you're sure to enjoy your time outdoors throughout most of the year. Spend your holiday playing golf in Scottsdale, which boasts over 330 days of sunshine, or take in the breathtaking scenery during the Verde Canyon Railroad’s scenic four-hour ride.

4. Puerto Rico
- Recommended lodging: Ritz-Carlton Dorado
Puerto Rico enjoys warm temperatures averaging in the 70s, even in December, making it a perfect getaway for snowbirds seeking a U.S. passport-free adventure. The festive season brings delicious treats like pasteles (savory root vegetable patties often filled with meat) and vibrant decorations such as pascua flowers and Nativity scenes. It’s important to note that the majority of Puerto Ricans identify as Roman Catholic.
From December to April, Puerto Rico sees an influx of visitors during its dry season. This time of year is full of celebrations, including Fiestas de la Calle San Sebastián and Fiesta de los Reyes Magos, which fill the streets of San Juan with joy. However, for those seeking tranquility, there are numerous hidden beaches and unique towns outside the capital to explore.

5. Australia
- Recommended accommodation: Park Hyatt Sydney
Visit Australia at the year’s end, and you'll experience a season where a functioning air conditioning unit is far more essential than a winter coat. December through February marks summer in the Southern Hemisphere, bringing soaring temperatures that often reach nearly 80 degrees Fahrenheit across the continent.
You can almost be certain that snow won't be a concern, which is great news given the myriad of activities available in the country lately. For newcomers, Dinogo editor and devoted Australia enthusiast Laura Redman recommends starting in Sydney and exploring iconic sites such as the Harbour Bridge, Bondi Beach, and the Opera House, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year. If you find your Thanksgiving feast has become a bit monotonous, consider a trip to Tasmania; its culinary scene features fresh seafood that may redefine your dining expectations.

6. Valencia, Spain
- Recommended accommodation: Caro Hotel
If the golden sandy beaches of Valencia aren’t enough to entice you to spend your last PTO days in this Spanish comunidad, consider this: One of its cities, Alicante, has earned the title of Europe’s sunniest city, boasting nearly 350 hours of sunshine each month. The Mediterranean-climate comunidad enjoys average temperatures between 40 to 60 degrees Fahrenheit from December to January, making a light jacket sufficient for strolls through Old Town or dining on paella in its birthplace. If you celebrate the New Year here, don’t forget to pack a bag of grapes: it’s a tradition to eat one grape with each of the twelve chimes at midnight for good luck, which is trickier than it seems.

7. Philippines
- Recommended place to stay: Amanpulo
The dry season in the Philippines spans from December to May, providing a sunny escape for those longing for a break from holiday snowstorms typical in much of the Northern Hemisphere. The festive season kicks off in September and lasts until early January, so keep an eye out for colorful stars called parols adorning shops and homes, symbolizing the Star of Bethlehem.
There’s no shortage of non-holiday adventures to enjoy across the archipelago’s over 7,000 islands. Head to Great Santa Cruz Island for its pink-sand beach, surf at Siargao, or visit Bohol to see bug-eyed primates and hills that resemble chocolate truffles.

8. Charleston, South Carolina
- Recommended place to stay: Zero George
Who says warm weather has to equate to beach time? The only thing better than enjoying the sunshine while walking past the historic pastel houses of Charleston’s Rainbow Row is heading to happy hour at one of the city’s excellent cocktail bars, such as Proof or the Gin Joint. A visit to Charleston is less about tanning and more about taking a break to savor some Southern hospitality. Get lost in the charming back alleys of Harleston Village, stroll through Waterfront Park, or explore the many delightful boutiques downtown. And if you find yourself dreaming about your next meal—will it be Chasing Sage or Lenoir?—then you're on the right track.

9. Isla Holbox, Mexico
- Recommended place to stay: Náay Boutique Hotel
One of Mexico’s best-kept secrets is that if you venture north or south from any of the popular beach destinations, you'll discover beautiful, tranquil, hidden beaches. To reach Isla Holbox, you'll need to travel two to three hours north of Cancun to Chiquila and then take a ferry. This island retains its remote, desert island atmosphere—expect unspoiled sands, azure waters, a few thatched-roof hotels, and an overwhelming desire to lounge in a hammock.

10. Lake Atitlán, Guatemala
- Where to stay: Casa Palopó
Guatemala is one of those places where you might find it hard to leave—especially after witnessing the beauty of Lake Atitlán. Begin your journey in Antigua, a charming city that has become a hub for adventure travel, and then venture a few hours northeast. Surrounding the lake are several small villages, each with its own unique character. Find your zen in the hippie haven of San Marcos La Laguna, discover local weaving traditions in San Juan La Laguna, or explore the shoreline while searching for hot springs in Santa Catarina Palopó.
