The holiday season has arrived. While this brings higher costs and crowded airports, it also offers the thrill of skiing and Christmas Markets. The top places to visit in December offer a wealth of joy that goes beyond just snow and Santa Claus. (Though there's plenty of that too.)

In the United States, spectacular light festivals light up December, featuring both human creations and celestial wonders. Europe embraces winter wholeheartedly, with ski resorts bustling into action. Germany, especially, dazzles this time of year, as its enchanting Christmas markets captivate both children and adults.

Asia shines for sports fans as well. Whether you're tackling the ski slopes in northern Japan or participating in a Cambodian marathon for a worthy cause, there are countless adventures to be found in my selection of the 12 best December getaways.

The start of ski season unveils a multitude of new travel opportunities for December. However, it’s not all about skiing; many of my ski recommendations are near other incredible destinations that are definitely worth a visit on their own.

In Japan, Dinogo’s data reveals that Tokyo and Osaka are favored destinations in December, featuring mild weather and reasonably priced accommodations. Europe boasts a wealth of magnificent cities—Paris, Barcelona, and London are just a short flight from the Alps and Dolomites.

1. Val d’Isère, France

The quintessential charming mountain village, Val d’Isère is situated high in France’s Western Alps, close to the Italian border. Just three hours from Lyon or Geneva, it’s part of the renowned Espace Killy, a paradise for snow sports. With 25,000 acres of top-tier terrain for both on-piste and off-piste skiing, skiers of all skill levels can find their ideal runs.

In Europe, the après ski scene is just as vital as the skiing itself. Val d’Isère excels in this regard, renowned for its blend of luxury and revelry. The most iconic party takes place daily from 3 pm at the hotel and bar La Folie Douce. Situated high on the slopes, you can hear the festivities before you arrive. Live bands perform on its rooftop, while revelers dance in their ski boots, and champagne is sprayed from above.

If the bubbly makes skiing back a challenge, take the Daille gondola instead. This will drop you straight into Val d’Isère, where you can visit the family-run gem La Rosée Blanche for a comforting vin chaud.

2. Trentino, Italy

Beyond Europe’s well-known ski resorts, Italy’s Trentino region is beginning to gain significant recognition. Nestled between the Alpine and Dolomite mountain ranges with convenient access to both, it’s easy to understand why.

Make your base in the charming town of Pinzolo. Relaxed yet vibrant, it hosts one of my favorite European hotels, the Lefay Resort & Spa Dolomiti. With its impressive 54,000-square-foot spa, Lefay is a fantastic retreat after a day on the slopes.

When the snow beckons, take the scenic drive to Madonna di Campiglio, the entrance to the Campiglio Dolomiti di Brenta. This vast ski area features 100 miles of runs, four snowboard parks, and incredible off-piste opportunities. For the thrill-seekers, guided climbing expeditions offer adventures among towering peaks and frozen waterfalls. Recharge at Rifugio Boch, a haven of delicious quick bites, stunning views, and endless mountain joy.

You’ll need to fly into a major airport and drive to Trentino. Options include Bologna, Milan, and the closest, Venice.

3. Deer Valley, Utah

• Why visit in December? To reveal the enchanting wonders of the mountains to your children.

Few destinations do family-friendly winter getaways quite like Utah’s Deer Valley, located just a short drive from Salt Lake City. This expansive natural playground features resorts, trails, and activities spread over six mountains and more than 100 runs. With lift passes capped at 7,500 per day, it never feels overcrowded and is celebrated for its award-winning ski schools.

Covering 2,000 acres, this terrain boasts “The Greatest Snow on Earth”—a phrase they’ve even trademarked! With snow, slopes, and options for every ability level, skiing and snowboarding are only part of the allure. You can also try snowmobiling, snowshoeing, sleigh rides, or dog sledding.

For a more leisurely experience, nearby Park City is serious about shopping, dining, and relaxation. Explore its historic and charming Main Street, packed with boutiques, bars, museums, and restaurants. While it's generally pricey, December is an ideal time to visit, as January brings the Sundance Film Festival, driving prices up higher than the surrounding peaks.

4. Niseko, Japan

As ski season kicks off, Niseko Village emerges as one of the top December travel destinations. This is partly because it remains under the radar for many skiers, ensuring it never feels overcrowded. More importantly, it offers some of the finest untracked adventures and off-piste trails globally. And the powder—like nothing I've ever encountered: chin-deep and incredibly fine. Pure magic!

If you’re passionate about backcountry riding, Niseko should be at the top of your December travel list. Seek out the exceptionally dry and deep snowpacks around Hanazono and Miharashi. Unlike many places, off-piste and backcountry skiing and snowboarding are permitted here.

International flights will land you in Sapporo, which is a two-hour drive away. While it offers ample accommodations and activities, it’s a bit too far for those early morning powder runs before the crowds arrive. It’s better to stay in Niseko itself—my preferred choice is always the Sekka Annupuri Lodge. Conveniently located near the Hanazono treeline and Annupuri gondola, it’s ideally situated to get you on the mountain first.

The festival’s main venue will be the Miami Beach Convention Center. However, the rest of Miami won’t miss the spotlight. With its vibrant street art scene, the city’s atmosphere becomes electric during festival week.

For a stylish and centrally located stay, book a room at the Moxy Miami South Beach. Prices will naturally soar, but with lively parties, fantastic performances, and plenty of celebrities, it’s Miami at its finest.

Now celebrating 59 years since its launch, the Trail of Lights has evolved into one of America’s largest festive spectacles. During my visit to Joshua Tree, I aimed to trace the final footsteps of one of my favorite musicians, Gram Parsons. While there, I was captivated by the beauty of its inky night skies and the stunning starscape, particularly The Milky Way.

As a designated Dark Sky Park, Joshua Tree will host an incredible celestial event this December. The annual Geminid meteor shower is expected to peak on December 13th. Although this year the meteors will compete with a nearly full moon, few places in the Northern Hemisphere can rival the viewing experience here.

Be warned, it will be cold. For a more immersive experience, secure a spot at Cottonwood Campground for easy access to the park’s eastern wilderness area, which is the darkest part, free from the glow of Palm Springs. For added comfort, consider booking a room in Twentynine Palms or Yucca Valley. And don’t forget to bring your binoculars!

Honestly, you could visit any German city in December and discover a fairytale Christmas market. I reside in Cologne, which boasts many wonderfully festive fairs. However, my top choice for the best Christmas market in Germany is the Nuremberg Christkindlesmarkt.

Known as the “little city of wood and cloth,” this market is among the oldest Christmas markets worldwide. It transforms the Main Market Square, running daily from November 29th through Christmas Eve in 2024. The atmosphere is enchanting, with hundreds of wooden stalls offering handmade ornaments, gingerbread lebkuchen, Spekulatius almond cookies, and plentiful warming glühwein. And let’s not forget the iconic bratwurst, with roots tracing back to Nuremberg since 1313!

Perfectly tailored for visitors, the market features English-language and self-guided tours alongside various events. Be sure to catch the vibrant lantern procession to Nuremberg Castle, and if you’re with children, don’t miss the Kinderweihnacht party at Hans-Sachs-Platz. Frohe Weihnachten!

Sweden embodies winter magic. In the northern region of Lapland, you’ll find Santa Claus, expansive reindeer herds, and the breathtaking Northern Lights. For any child, it must be one of the ultimate December destinations.

To reach this enchanting place, you’ll likely fly through a major hub like Gothenburg, which is a worthwhile stop. Spend a few days soaking in the festive atmosphere at Liseberg Gardens. From November 18th to January 7th, these gardens transform into a delightful Christmas market and playground. The Liseberg theme park is especially charming, reimagined as a children’s Christmas wonderland called Tomtebyn.

For kids, it’s an engaging adventure. Explore Santa’s Village using a map and compass to collect prizes during the Elves’ Adventure. Craft Christmas wish lists while enjoying festive snacks in the Elves’ Cottage before submitting them to the magic wish machine in Santa’s Workshop.

While the children are entertained, adults can join in the fun too. In 2024, a brand-new winter market will debut, featuring a free ice rink and Blossa Ice Bar. Walking its corridors, you might find yourself imagining life as a daring archaeologist, akin to the characters in adventure films.

On December 1st, something remarkable occurs. An annual half marathon supporting victims of landmines in Cambodia brings thousands of runners to the area, replacing the usual leisurely tourists. For two weeks during the winter solstice, the Chawmos festival, celebrated by the Kalash people, brings vibrant life to this serene valley. The first week is reserved for locals, while the second week welcomes the public—though few have attended. For days, the celebrations include music, dance, religious rituals, goat sacrifices, feasting, and communal drinking.

This is the Kalash people's most significant time of year, a weeklong celebration honoring life, deities, and ancestors. It's not for the timid, but participating is a remarkable experience.
