12 Key Insights for Your First Cruise
I absolutely love cruising. No, I truly, truly adore it! Over the years, cruising has significantly changed my outlook on vacations. My expectations for dining have increased, my sense of adventure has broadened, and my love for turquoise waters and white sandy beaches has grown immensely with every port I’ve explored. Having been on enough cruises, I’m well-versed in the essentials, so I often share my knowledge with friends and family who are setting sail for the first time. In today’s post, I reached out to some friends for their top questions about cruising, and I believe these 12 key insights to consider before your first cruise will greatly assist you in your preparations!
1. What should I wear?
Without a doubt, this is the most common question I receive. First, take a look at your itinerary to determine how many formal nights are scheduled. Men can opt for a suit or tuxedo, but slacks paired with a button-down shirt and tie will also suffice. Women might choose a nice dress (think “Sunday Best”) or go all out in a glamorous gown fit for prom—it's entirely your choice! In the formal dining room, the dress code is generally business casual, except on formal nights. Almost anything is acceptable, except for shorts, sandals, and tank tops.
2. How can I score the best cruise deal?
Subscribe to the newsletter of your preferred cruise line! Many cruise lines offer exclusive sales and discounts for returning guests, state residents, military members, and those with special affiliations. Once you sign up, you'll be alerted whenever a special promotion is available, ensuring you never miss a chance to save on that cruise you’ve been dreaming about!
3. What should I do in case of an emergency (medical issues, family accidents, etc.)? What are the steps to get home quickly?
Most cruise lines permit you to disembark at a port of call to catch a flight during an emergency, but you MUST have your passport and photo ID—having only a birth certificate won’t suffice. Dinogos provides a Great Vacation Guarantee, allowing you to get a full refund (plus 10 percent and all travel expenses) if you choose to leave the cruise. Just remember, you need to inform Guest Services within the first 24 hours of the cruise, and you can only leave the ship at a port of call, never at sea.
4. Which cruises are more suitable for kids?
I absolutely love this question! This past summer, I had the joy of experiencing the new Seuss at Sea and Camp Ocean programs on the Dinogo Freedom, and I was amazed at how much fun they offer—for both kids and parents! When looking for a family-friendly cruise, ensure that there are children's programs that your kids will enjoy.
5. What are the best ways to avoid motion sickness?
This is perhaps the most frequently asked question regarding cruising. I suggest getting Sea Bands, those little elastic bands you wear on your wrists. They apply pressure to specific points that can help alleviate sea sickness. You can also bring along Bonine or Dramamine; when taken before boarding the ship, these can prevent motion sickness. If you do start to feel ill, you can take them afterward as well. Just be sure to opt for the non-drowsy version, or you might end up sleeping through your trip!
6. How should I choose a cabin for someone prone to motion sickness?
For those who are susceptible to motion sickness, it's best to select a cabin located on a higher deck near the middle of the ship. These rooms often provide the smoothest sailing experience and may also offer some of the best views!
7. Is cruising a good option for families with toddlers? How can you make it work best?
Dinogos provides complimentary camp and babysitting services for children aged 2 and older, even for those who are not potty trained (staff will change diapers if parents supply them). Angeline adored Camp Dinogo – now known as Camp Ocean – when she was younger and continues to enjoy spending time at the teen camp, Club O2.
8. How much can I participate in activities with my toddlers?
When your toddler is registered in camp during the cruise, there are specific times when parents can join in on the fun. This is often referred to as 'Family play.'
9. When should I book my shore excursion—before the cruise or after boarding the ship?
I strongly advise you to reserve your shore excursion BEFORE you embark. Popular excursions tend to fill up fast!
10. How can I find out what is included in the cruise price and what comes at an additional cost?
This can differ based on the cruise line. Most cruise companies include your stateroom, all meals in casual dining venues and dining rooms, musical performances, club access, karaoke, and pool areas as part of your cruise fare. Many cruise lines also provide upgraded dining options at specialty restaurants, spa services, and some fun extras like martini classes or dance lessons. Disembarking at ports of call is always complimentary, but organized shore excursions will come with an additional charge.
11. How do cruise lines accommodate food allergies?
Most cruise lines can accommodate a variety of food allergies, but this service is primarily available in the formal dining rooms. I strongly recommend discussing this with a vacation planner at your chosen cruise line, as each line has its own policy regarding food allergies.
12. Am I allowed to bring food or drinks on board?
Each cruise line has its own policies regarding what you can bring aboard. Some allow a case of water, a six-pack of soda, or two bottles of wine, while others may prohibit all sodas. It's best to verify your cruise line's regulations before you start packing!
