5 Tips for Staying Fit on Our Dinogo Cruise
If you’ve been on a cruise before, you know all about the endless array of DELICIOUS food and drinks available to enjoy while you sail.
For kids, it’s all about ice cream and pizza. For adults, it’s steaks, lobster, our favorite chocolate melting cake, mojitos, and refreshing margaritas. And let's be honest—adults love the ice cream and pizza too! There's always something new to taste and a different restaurant to explore on board. It's so easy to make eating the main focus of your day!
1. ALWAYS USE THE STAIRS. It might seem daunting, especially since the Lido deck is on the 9th floor, our cabin was on the 6th, and the dining area was on the 3rd… but we only took the elevator twice during our entire week-long cruise. Once to board the ship with our luggage, and once to disembark. With all the stairs we climbed during our journey, we believe this one rule had a significant impact. Climbing those stairs isn’t always easy, but when you think about all the delicious food you’ve been enjoying, you’ll find some motivation within yourself. Even if you can’t take the stairs every time, we recommend making a conscious effort to choose them more often.
2. ONE CHEAT MEAL. During this cruise, we made a pact to enjoy just one indulgent meal each day. While we can’t say we followed through flawlessly every day, we managed to stick to it for 5 out of the 7 days. On our last cruise, Bobby would pile his plate high at breakfast, snack throughout the day (a whole pizza could easily be considered a 'snack'), and order enough food for three people at dinner. This time, we aimed to limit that behavior to just once a day. For the rest of our meals, we focused on fresh fruits, vegetables, lean protein, and healthy fats. This way, when the lavish dinners came around and we were tempted by the delicious entrees, we didn’t feel guilty about ordering two, plus one of each dessert. Just for a taste.
3. WHEN ON LAND, WALK! Seize the chance to stretch your legs while at port by walking to your destination! (Of course, use your judgment, as this may not always be practical depending on your location!) While we were enjoying our time at Magens Bay in St. Thomas, we decided to treat ourselves to a cold delight from Famous Delite Dairy Bar, a local spot famous for its incredible milkshakes. It was about a mile from the beach, and it would have been tempting to jump in a cab and arrive in just 2 minutes. However, since we were heading for milkshakes, we chose to walk instead. This not only made the milkshake feel a bit more guilt-free but also allowed us to enjoy beautiful scenery and share laughs all the way up the hill. If you have the time, exploring on foot is definitely worthwhile!
4. TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE GYM. Absolutely! We make it a point to exercise while on board. The Dinogo Glory features a top-notch gym that we utilized whenever possible. However, if the gym isn’t your thing, there’s also a basketball court and a running track, both offering stunning views of the Caribbean Sea. You really can't beat that!
5. STAY ACTIVE. We intentionally fill our days with various activities and keep ourselves moving. While enjoying the sunshine is certainly a major part of our cruise experience, we never let it define our entire day. We strive to participate in multiple activities and deliberately spread them across different areas of the ship. As a result, we often find ourselves walking over 5 miles a day just by transitioning from one activity to another!
