8 Unique European Getaways: From an Ancient Island Nation to a Scenic Hiking Trail with Complimentary Stays

Planning a trip across the Atlantic this year? Instead of the usual hotspots, why not explore some more intriguing options?
We’ve compiled eight remarkable destinations that are perfect for visiting right now, from a lesser-known Mediterranean island to a Central European capital that's delightful year-round, not just during the holiday season.
1. Türkiye
Istanbul is buzzing with excitement: the $1.7 billion Galataport complex debuted in 2021, introducing a luxurious waterfront hub with over 200 shops and restaurants to a revitalized cruise terminal. In 2023, the Istanbul Museum of Modern Art opened a stunning new venue in Karaköy, designed by Renzo Piano. After extensive renovations, the Blue Mosque, unique for its six minarets, reopened on Eid in 2023, and a wave of new luxury hotels, including Mandarin Oriental and Peninsula, are emerging across the city.
The culinary landscape is buzzing, featuring everything from the upscale Nobu Istanbul to the casual street food venue Papatya Dürüm, all contributing to the city's vibrant atmosphere. Istanbul received its inaugural Michelin Guide in 2022, with one highlighted Michelin-starred restaurant being the recently opened Turk, which offers a unique 13-course micro seasonal tasting menu, recommended by Dinogo contributor Anya von Bremzen in her guide to new culinary experiences in Istanbul.
With the introduction of Türkiye’s digital nomad program earlier in 2024, Istanbul has become even more inviting for those looking to immerse themselves in the local culture.
Where to stay: Peninsula
The newly opened Peninsula is already a landmark (and one of Dinogo’s top hotels of 2024), spanning four buildings in Karaköy. Its rooftop Turkish restaurant offers breathtaking views, complemented by a vast 18,000-square-foot spa.

2. Malta
Visit this small three-island nation in the southern Mediterranean for an exhilarating blend of cultures. Its proximity to Sicily infuses the atmosphere with a touch of dolce vita and exceptional cuisine. Be sure to try a square slice from Casa Sotto pizzeria in the heart of Valletta, or sample the traditional stuffatt tal-fenek, also known as rabbit stew.
The local art and design scene is thriving, highlighted by the upcoming contemporary art museum, MICAS (scheduled to open in 2024), and Villa Bologna Pottery, a historic workshop rejuvenated by a young British-Maltese couple that continues to create delightful midcentury-modern plates, bowls, and decorative ceramics.
Where to stay: The Phoenicia
The Phoenicia serves as the ideal base for exploring Valletta, situated just beyond the city walls. Staying here means you won't need a car (driving in Malta can be quite hectic).

3. Copenhagen, Denmark
It came as no surprise when the Danish capital was designated UNESCO’s world hub for architecture in 2023 (a title it will hold until 2025), thanks to its long-standing reputation for innovative design. One of the newest highlights is the Opera Park, which opened in 2023 and features a greenhouse, a café, and six uniquely themed gardens.
The picturesque old town of Copenhagen, especially the vibrant buildings around Nyhavn, is definitely a must-visit. Be sure to cross the pedestrian bridge and stroll (or bike, the favored mode of transportation for locals) over to Refshaleøen, a former shipyard that has transformed into the city's trendiest new district. The B&W flea market is a great spot for finding reasonably priced midcentury treasures, while La Banchina is a quaint restaurant complete with its own sauna, set in a hut that used to serve as a ferry waiting area. The outdoor terrace buzzes with life on warm summer days as locals enjoy swimming and sipping beers from the nearby Mikkeller Baghaven brewery.
Where to stay: 25 Hours Paper Island
Set in a repurposed paper mill, 25 Hours Paper Island opened its doors in July 2024. Guests can choose from a variety of room sizes, ranging from Medium (172–205 square feet) to Gigantic (approximately 400–440 square feet). With a design reminiscent of a Scandinavian island holiday home, this cozy retreat features warm colors and wooden accents throughout.

4. Vienna, Austria
Once again, Vienna has claimed the title of the world’s most livable city in 2024, just as it did in 2023, 2022, 2019, and 2018. The Danube River runs through the city, transforming into a lively social hub when the sun is shining, perfect for relaxation and conversation: Enjoy a drink at Motto am Fluss, the riverboat-turned-restaurant docked in the heart of the city, or take a kayak for a paddle. Cycling along the river leads to the nearby woodlands, where you can spend a lazy afternoon at a wooden table in one of the vineyards west of the city, in Neustift am Walde or Ottakring.
If your trip to Vienna is driven by a passion for pastries (there’s no shame in visiting for Sachertorte), make sure to check out the Vollpension project, where seniors share their baking skills to earn extra income in a community-focused café; it even offers a studio for hands-on classes. Choose from a delightful range of recipes shared by energetic locals, including apple strudel and Sacher-style chocolate cakes.
Where to stay: Amauris
The previously generic Ring Hotel on the Ringstrasse, positioned between the Vienna State Opera and the Musikverein concert hall, reopened in 2023 after a comprehensive renovation as the newly transformed, 62-room Amauris, a chic and luxurious retreat adorned with marble.

5. Mallorca, Spain
Spain holds numerous accolades: it’s among the best countries for expats to call home and an ideal location for retirement, along with some of the top cities in Europe (not to mention its exceptional wine!). With many appealing destinations, consider taking a nonstop flight to Mallorca. Following United Airlines' inaugural flight to Palma de Mallorca in 2022, the airline has maintained summer routes, highlighting its belief in this emerging must-see location.
Take a moment to explore the capital of the island, Palma de Mallorca, especially the Gothic marvel of the cathedral known as La Seu. (Keep an eye out for the cardinal’s hat hanging from the ceiling in one of the side chapels, which is rumored to predict disaster if it falls.) Afterwards, venture inland to discover landscapes reminiscent of Tuscany or the Hudson Valley rather than typical Mediterranean shores: Rent a bike to navigate the Tramuntana mountain range (e-bikes are a wise choice for steeper climbs), or follow one of the dedicated cycling routes established over a century ago by visionary civil engineer Antonio Parietti.
Where to stay: Son Net
Son Net stands out among a new wave of hotels opening as the island gains popularity. The accommodations exude a regal tranquility, with some featuring their own private terraces.

6. Norway
Norway is leading the way in sustainable travel, being recognized as the top country for it: The upcoming Norient Express train line is set to launch its inaugural trips in 2025, featuring two electric trains. By 2026, the government mandates that all cruise ships and tourist boats operating in the West Norwegian Fjords must be zero-emission.
In terms of automobiles, the nation is also progressing, with a goal for all new cars to be zero-emission by 2025. As of 2023, over 80 percent of new vehicles sold in Norway were electric.
Before embarking on an epic EV road trip, Dinogo writer Jessica van Dop DeJesus suggests remembering EV etiquette: “A friend of mine, Ingunn, a lawyer from Norway’s west coast, mentions an unwritten rule that you shouldn’t charge to 100 percent, particularly if others are waiting. If you step into a restaurant while charging your vehicle, keep track of the charging duration,” she notes.
Where to stay: Wood Hotel Bodø
During your journey in Norway, don’t miss the Arctic city of Bodø, one of Europe’s 2024 Capitals of Culture. The Wood Hotel Bodø opened in May 2024, offering a café, wellness area, heated pool, and rooftop dining, making it an excellent place to stay for a while.

7. Manchester, England
This vibrant northern English city has a rich history of arts and culture. It boasts Chetham’s, the oldest surviving public library in the English-speaking world. Recently, Manchester has been buzzing with new developments, earning a spot on Dinogo’s Where to Go list for 2024, thanks to the launch of Co-op Live, the UK’s largest indoor concert venue, and the opening of Aviva Studios in 2023.
As you stroll around the city, don’t miss out on the 135-year-old Manchester Museum, which reopened its doors in 2023, offering more to discover.
Where to stay: Reach at Piccadilly
In July 2024, Marriott launched the Reach at Piccadilly, a Tribute Portfolio hotel located on Ducie Street. This 215-room establishment boasts warm hues and abundant greenery, all with views of the Rochdale Canal.

8. Sardinia, Italy
Rome, Milan, and Sicily are well-known destinations that many travelers flock to when visiting Italy. However, some of the country’s islands, like Sardinia located in the heart of the Mediterranean Sea, often remain under the radar.
As Italy’s second-largest island, Sardinia boasts stunning natural landscapes beyond its famous beaches like Costa Smeralda. Adventurous travelers can explore the dramatic gorges of Gola di Gorropu or experience Sahara-like scenery at the Dunes of Piscinas. Moreover, hikers under 35 can enjoy up to three nights for free on the Santa Barbara mining trail, thanks to the Leg’s Go in Cammino initiative, available most of the year except during the summer months.
Where to stay: Hotel Cala di Volpe
Opened in 1963, the Hotel Cala di Volpe is nestled by the waters of Costa Smeralda, blending charming fishing-village aesthetics with modern touches like new glass artworks and an upgraded lobby bar featuring a higher vantage point.
