A first glimpse: Exploring the new Banyan Tree Higashiyama Kyoto

One of the joys of traveling is experiencing remarkable hotels brimming with character, local flair, and a genuine sense of place. In Japan, the Banyan Group, in collaboration with Accor, has unveiled the Banyan Tree Higashiyama Kyoto, a breathtaking and luxurious hotel that embodies all these qualities—and more.
TPG recently had the chance to take a brief tour of the new resort shortly after its opening in the scenic Higashiyama district, known for its rich history. Visitors in rented kimonos stroll along charming streets, passing by historic temples such as Kiyomizu-dera, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. (Though it’s hard to imagine ancient geishas grabbing coffee from Starbucks, even if the local café features a tatami mat floor.)

As the first Banyan Tree property in Japan, this hotel was carefully redeveloped on the site of the former Hotel Ryozen to meet the brand's exceptional standards while honoring the unique aspects that made the location special, such as the Higashiyama Onsen hot spring.

Banyan Tree Higashiyama Kyoto features 52 guest rooms, including eight that draw water directly from the hot springs. Each room embodies a Japanese phrase that translates to "hidden beauty revealed" and incorporates traditional elements like cypress wood bathtubs, tatami mats, and some rooms even have sunken Japanese tables known as horigotatsu.

Guests and visitors at the hotel will discover a stunning Noh stage, where the art of Nohgaku has flourished for approximately 650 years. At this venue, traditional Nohgaku performances centered on gods and spirits are intertwined with contemporary art, musical events, and various other performances that take place on the stage.

If you happen to be there, take a stroll past the stage and into the bamboo grove, which offers a tranquil experience reminiscent of the nearby Arashiyama Bamboo Forest — minus the crowds. This is one of three gardens on the property where guests can participate in special relaxation events, such as yoga classes.

Banyan Tree is renowned for its wellness experiences and tranquil spas, so it's no wonder that Higashiyama Kyoto features a spa with six treatment rooms, each equipped with a tub filled with hot spring water (though I would personally recommend opting for one of the onsen rooms to enjoy a private spa experience right in your own room).

The hotel's dining options include a Japanese restaurant that serves seasonal dishes showcasing Kyoto's famous produce, along with a sake bar.
In a city brimming with distinctive hotels — from the recently opened Six Senses Kyoto to luxurious brands like Aman, Four Seasons, and Ritz-Carlton — Banyan Tree Higashiyama Kyoto provides a truly exceptional experience set against the backdrop of one of the world's most fascinating cities. This new hotel is a remarkable addition to an already vibrant hotel landscape.
Although Banyan Tree Higashiyama Kyoto is part of Accor Live Limitless, its loyalty program operates slightly differently than usual. Instead of redeeming award nights for a fixed number of points, members can exchange 2,000 points for a €40 discount (approximately $44) on their stay.
Rates for a stay at Banyan Tree Higashiyama Kyoto begin at $1,365 per night and include breakfast as well as one dinner.
