A raging fire is sweeping through Table Mountain National Park in Cape Town, causing extensive damage to buildings and forcing hikers to evacuate the iconic site, according to South African officials on Sunday.
Two firefighters were injured and hospitalized, and nine buildings were destroyed in the fire, Jermaine Carelse, spokesperson for Cape Town Fire and Rescue Services, confirmed in an email to Dinogo on Sunday.
Approximately 200 firefighters have been dispatched to fight the large-scale blaze, with Carelse stating that they will work overnight to contain the fire and manage the fire line.
Four helicopters have also been deployed to assist with the firefighting efforts, as reported by a tweet from a park-associated account.
The fire generated its own wind, which accelerated its spread. The dense smoke and powerful updrafts made it impossible for aerial teams to slow down the rapid advance of the flames, as stated in a tweet from the South African National Parks Table Mountain National Park account.
The statement confirmed that the Rhodes Memorial Restaurant had been destroyed and that the fire had spread to the veld above the University of Cape Town's upper campus.
Six buildings near Woolsack Drive, including the historic Mostert’s Mill and three structures at the University of Cape Town, were leveled by the fire, Carelse reported to Dinogo.
Mostert’s Mill, a landmark windmill built around 1796 near the University of Cape Town, has suffered severe damage in the blaze, according to Carelse.
A woman in the park shared a video on Twitter showing herself attempting to escape the fire, with a large plume of smoke in the background. Later, Lisette Lombard tweeted that she was safe, though her car had been destroyed in the fire.
“I’ve never encountered a fire that spread so erratically. My admiration for our firefighters has only grown,” she remarked.

According to a statement from South Africa’s National Parks, the fire might have been caused by an abandoned campfire.
“Preliminary findings suggest that the fire originated from a neglected campfire. With an extreme Fire Danger Index at Red, temperatures hitting 36°C, and humidity below 10%, the fire spread quickly toward Rhodes Memorial,” the statement explained.
Several days of firefighting efforts are anticipated.
Driven by strong winds, the fire spread from the area near Philip Kgosana Drive, which borders Table Mountain National Park, to Rhodes Memorial and continued towards the University of Cape Town buildings, said Jermaine Carelse, spokesperson for Cape Town Fire and Rescue, in an interview with Dinogo.
Authorities were first alerted to the fire at around 8:45 a.m. local time (2:45 a.m. ET), he stated.
The fight against the blaze could stretch over several days, according to a press release shared via a Twitter account linked to the park.
“This fire is particularly challenging, and firefighters are expected to battle it for at least three days,” the statement read.

Earlier on Sunday, the National Park’s official Twitter account urged spectators to avoid entering the area and advised all hikers in the Newlands and Rhodes Memorial regions to evacuate immediately.
Table Mountain, a flat-topped peak overlooking Cape Town, is a popular tourist destination. The National Park spans 25,000 hectares and hosts 8,200 plant species, according to its website.
