A new addition to the fleet? Disney Cruise Line is set to welcome its ninth ship in 2029.
As if launching four new ships over four years wasn't enough, Disney announced on Tuesday that it plans to debut yet another cruise ship in early 2029, collaborating with Oriental Land Company, the operator of Disney's theme parks and resorts in Japan.
The yet-to-be-named new ship will be stationed in Tokyo, offering short cruises that Disney enthusiasts can conveniently pair with a trip to Tokyo Disney.
The development of this Tokyo-based ship is part of a 10-year, $60 billion initiative to expand Disney's theme parks and cruise offerings. Oriental Land Company will construct and manage the Disney-branded cruise operations in Japan.
Inspired by Disney Wish, this ship will be the ninth in Disney's fleet and is projected to accommodate 4,000 guests. It will be designed with the preferences of Japanese travelers in mind and will primarily conduct short voyages year-round from Tokyo.
Construction for the new ship is anticipated to commence at the Meyer Werft shipyard in Papenburg, Germany, in 2025.
Following a decade without expansion, Disney is poised to more than double its fleet in just a few years with this new vessel. After the launch of Disney Fantasy in 2012, the cruise line did not grow until 2022 when it introduced Disney Wish. The sister ships Disney Treasure and Disney Destiny are scheduled to launch in 2024 and 2026, respectively, with the Singapore-based Disney Adventure set to debut in Asia in 2025.
Disney's other recent investments in Asia include a significant expansion at Tokyo DisneySea, its ocean-themed park in Japan. The park recently unveiled Fantasy Springs, bringing to life the worlds of "Frozen," "Tangled," and "Peter Pan." Additionally, late 2023 saw the grand opening of the first-ever World of Frozen at Hong Kong Disneyland, along with a "Zootopia" experience at Shanghai Disneyland. Just last month, Disney announced further expansions of Marvel-themed attractions at Hong Kong Disneyland.
Further information regarding Disney's Tokyo-based ship will be disclosed at a future date.
