A pilot has made aviation history by successfully landing an aircraft on the helipad of the Burj Al Arab, a feat never accomplished before.
Polish aviator Lukasz Czepiela achieved a groundbreaking milestone on Tuesday, becoming the first person to land a plane on the helipad of the renowned Burj Al Arab Jumeirah hotel in Dubai.
Czepiela managed to bring his modified light aircraft to a halt in just 21 meters (68 feet) on a platform that was only 27 meters (89 feet) wide, perched 212 meters (696 feet) above ground on top of the 56-story tower.
He explained that the toughest part of the landing was the absence of external reference points, which are typically found at airports where long runways provide clear markers for pilots.
The daring stunt had been in development since 2021 and required 650 test landings, as revealed by Red Bull, the sponsor of the event.
While Lukasz Czepiela's primary role is as a captain of an Airbus A320, his flying credentials extend far beyond the cockpit, with notable achievements such as claiming the 2018 world champion title in the Red Bull Air Race's Challenger Class and landing an aircraft on a wooden pier in Sopot, Poland.
Czepiela now shares the prestigious helipad of the Burj Al Arab with other famous figures, including tennis legends Roger Federer and Andre Agassi, who faced off in a match there in 2005, and Formula 1 star David Coulthard, who performed donuts on the helipad in 2013.
