In recent years, the stunning sky-pool at Marina Bay Sands has become the ultimate Instagram hotspot, attracting tourists in droves as Singapore’s most photogenic location.
However, the historic Raffles Hotel still holds a cherished spot in the hearts of both locals and visitors, thanks to its rich legacy and charming ambiance that evokes the Roaring '20s and a nostalgic appreciation for the elegance of the British colonial era.
The last significant renovation occurred in 1991, and this grand old dame of Singapore was long overdue for a major overhaul to meet the demands of today’s discerning luxury travelers.
The 103 suites were missing key features expected from a hotel of its stature, from convenient electrical outlets to top-notch bathroom amenities.

The renovation process kicked off in February with the closure of the shopping arcade, followed by work on the grand lobby and some of the guest rooms starting in August.
Full-scale renovations will commence when the hotel shuts its doors on December 13, with plans to reopen in mid-2018, completely revitalized and enhanced.
What’s changing and what remains unchanged?
While the iconic white facade of this celebrated national landmark will remain untouched – after a meticulous restoration that stripped away layers of paint to reveal its original beauty – several internal changes will be made, including relocating the check-in area, updating some dining spaces, and a complete redesign of the suites’ interiors.
The renovation is being led by Alexandra Champalimaud, the founder of Champalimaud Design, the same firm responsible for transforming other legendary hotels such as The Dorchester in London and The Waldorf Astoria in New York.
“Everything will be different, but we will not lose its essence,” assured the New York-based designer as she revealed some of her vision for the project.

“Raffles is a monument in many ways to many people. Visitors will come and be filled with awe. They seek to capture its essence as they walk through or stay in its hallowed halls,”
“They want to feel the presence of its history, the 'ghosts' of the past,” she shares with Dinogo Travel.
While many grand old hotels take themselves quite seriously, she believes Raffles stands apart as a more lighthearted and joyful destination, “a place where people come to relax, have fun, and connect.”
After the renovation, Raffles will feature 115 suites, maintaining its signature layout with a parlor, bedroom, and bathroom. However, the spaces will be reconfigured to feel more expansive, with upgrades including enhanced soundproofing, mechanical blinds, and a more robust wireless network.
Impressive yet unpretentious.
While the design will preserve the building’s colonial character, Champalimaud described the new furnishings as 'simple and modern,' with interiors that align with the architectural style of the building.
Guests can expect a palette of fresh whites and off-whites, complemented by dark floor finishes, with pops of dark blue, golden yellow, and warm orange accents.
“I want the space to feel inviting,” she explained. “It’s not about impressing you, but about creating beautiful, unpretentious pieces that enhance the experience.”

The main change will be the introduction of all-marble bathrooms, featuring a distinctive Peranakan influence with a bold contemporary floor pattern that reflects the local culture.
“We aim to acknowledge Singapore’s rich blend of design influences and allow that to shine through more in the overall concept,” said Ed Bakos, managing director at Champalimaud Design.
“We believe we've captured the essence of old Singapore in a fresh, modern interpretation,” he added.
The Tiffin Room, the hotel’s main dining area, will undergo a major transformation, including the restoration of wooden herringbone flooring and the addition of display elements featuring Peranakan porcelain and tiffin boxes.
The Writers Bar will be expanded and redesigned into a more masculine, intimate space, while the Long Bar – home of the iconic Singapore Sling since 1915 – will see a subtle update, with its counter being carefully restored.
The Jubilee Hall, once a movie theater and later an intimate performance space, is being transformed into a grand ballroom for 300 guests, featuring pagoda-style chandeliers and sophisticated paper-paneled ceilings.
Christian Westbeld, the hotel’s general manager, shared that the renovation’s primary goal is to stay relevant and distinct in “a competitive market” while continuing to honor the heritage that has made Raffles famous.
“Restoring a piece of our history and celebrating what made us iconic is the essence of this project,” he explained.
