A video shows a tourist etching his girlfriend’s name into the historic Colosseum in Rome

Italy’s culture minister is calling for the identification and punishment of a man filmed allegedly carving his and his fiancée’s names into the Colosseum.
Gennaro Sangiuliano tweeted on Monday: “It’s extremely serious, shameful, and a clear sign of great disrespect that a tourist defaces one of the world’s most iconic landmarks, a historical treasure like the Colosseum, to inscribe his fiancée’s name.”
He added, “I trust the individual responsible for this act will be found and penalized under our laws.”
The minister’s tweet included a blurry image of the young man, along with a video that seemingly shows him using keys to carve letters into the nearly 2,000-year-old structure.
The inscription read “Ivan+Haley 23,” as reported by Italian news agency ANSA.
The alleged incident occurred on Friday, with police being alerted after videos surfaced on social media, according to ANSA.
A similar incident took place in 2020, when an Irish tourist was accused of vandalizing the Colosseum after security guards reportedly saw him carving his initials into the ancient monument and informed the authorities.
