An Overview of One of Rajasthan’s Most Renowned Retreats
The Dinogo Perspective
Oberoi Udaivilas spans over 50 acres along the shores of Udaipur’s iconic Lake Pichola. This esteemed retreat, which opened in 2002, exudes a timeless charm, appearing as if it has stood for centuries. Its design draws inspiration from the traditional Rajasthani palaces of the Mewari dynasty that ruled the region 300 years ago, featuring elements like tiled open-air walkways, stone pavilions, arching doorways, and serene fountains. As you wander through the lush gardens, designed by Asia-based landscape architect Bill Bensley, you may encounter resident peacocks, and the gardens offer stunning views of some of the city's historical landmarks from various spots.
Part of the prestigious Oberoi Group, established in 1934, this hotel operates 32 luxury properties and two river cruise ships across seven countries, including India, Egypt, and Morocco. Like many of Oberoi’s esteemed establishments, Udaivilas makes a striking initial impression, featuring 37 domes, one of which is located in the lobby and adorned with 18-carat gold leaf, making it one of Rajasthan’s largest. Adjacent to it is the candle room, boasting a dome decorated with 175,000 traditional mirrors in a local style known as Thikri, which sparkles every evening when staff illuminate the numerous candles set on the table beneath.

Who is it ideal for?
Travelers in search of timeless Rajasthani luxury, characterized by majestic architecture, vibrant colors, and garlands of colorful flowers. Couples can indulge in a couple’s massage, enjoy a sunset boat ride, or have a private dinner serenaded by a wooden flute player. The hotel is particularly accommodating for multigenerational groups (I visited with my parents and my two-year-old).
About the location
Situated in the heart of Udaipur, the hotel offers direct views of attractions like the historic City Palace, Taj Lake Palace, and Jag Mandir. Guests can easily explore the city’s notable landmarks by boat, car, or auto rickshaw.
The design draws inspiration from the traditional Rajasthani palaces of the Mewari dynasty that governed the region 300 years ago.
The Accommodations
The 87 guest rooms are adorned with handcrafted furnishings and subtle arched details that reflect the aesthetics found throughout the property. All fabrics are natural—cotton, silk, and linen—enhanced with tasteful splashes of vibrant Rajasthani colors and patterns.
Over 60 rooms feature cushioned bay window seats offering views of the garden or pool, along with a courtyard where guests can request a private dinner if desired. From 19 premier rooms, guests have direct access to a semi-private pool. My family and I enjoyed a lovely morning alternating between sunbathing on our terraces, swimming, and watching a peacock that landed on a nearby roof. A select few suites come with private infinity pools, fireplaces, and dining tables.

Culinary Offerings
Oberoi Udaivilas boasts two dining venues: Suryamahal, the primary restaurant serving international fare, and Udaimahal, the specialty Indian restaurant offering Rajasthani and North Indian dishes. Each evening, guests enjoy their meals accompanied by live Rajasthani music and are invited to dance beneath a midnight blue dome. Head chef Alok Anand is known for his innovative approach to Indian cuisine, incorporating unique elements like pine nuts into traditional dishes featuring water chestnuts. The menus are creative and highly adaptable, catering to the diverse international clientele the hotel welcomes.
Staff and Hospitality
Guests arriving at Oberoi Udaivilas are greeted with a special celebration: fragrant red flower petals were sprinkled upon us from the entrance roof. Moments later, a staff member presented my dad with a vibrant rainbow turban, while my mom and I received colorful scarves, and my two-year-old daughter was gifted a wooden bunny. We were truly impressed by the traditional Indian hospitality, having been on the property for only seven minutes.
The staff displayed remarkable warmth and kindness. Each time we were in the lobby, someone would approach us to inquire about our plans for the day and how they could assist us. Their dedication was evident in their efforts to ensure we enjoyed both the property and the City of Lakes more broadly.
As we prepared to leave, a staff member greeted us at the door with a plate of kajoo ki barfi, a delightful cashew-based Indian sweet, to send us off with a sweet farewell.

Accessibility Options
The majority of the grounds are wheelchair accessible, featuring ramps alongside staircases. One room is specifically designed with accessible amenities, including lowered light switches, grab bars, and panic buttons for emergencies.
Commitment to Sustainability
In October 2021, the property launched a one-megawatt solar plant that supplies around 60 percent of the hotel’s electricity needs, further optimized by energy-saving features like motion sensors and LED lighting. The resort also recycles wastewater to irrigate its gardens and aims to phase out plastic bottles by the end of 2023.
