Are you renewing your Global Entry? CBP now allows certain travelers to schedule interviews remotely.

The pandemic has significantly disrupted the Global Entry program, but the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) is introducing a novel solution to help clear the backlog of renewals for Trusted Traveler Program members. They are launching a pilot program for remote interviews, enabling eligible TTP members to complete their enrollment renewal interviews via video conferencing with a CBP officer.
A CBP spokesperson shared, "Remote interviews will streamline the process for all TTP applicants, helping reduce wait times for traditional enrollment center interviews."
As travel picks up with vacationers and business flyers, the systems supporting the travel industry are struggling to regain their footing after a year of inactivity due to the pandemic. One major issue is the sluggish renewal process for vital travel documents.
For instance, passport processing is currently overwhelmed due to an "unprecedented backlog" of appointments stemming from COVID-19, prompting the U.S. government to permit American citizens abroad to return home with expired passports. Additionally, Global Entry was facing challenges even before the pandemic halted global travel, making this new strategy a welcome relief for those fortunate enough to participate.
The CBP assures that the remote interview process will adhere to strict security and privacy standards to safeguard participants. As this is a pilot initiative, initial participation will be limited. According to the CBP's official site, only renewing Global Entry members who have been conditionally approved can join the pilot.
To qualify for participation, TTP members must meet the following criteria:
- Must be conditionally approved for a TTP renewal;
- Must be at least 18 years old;
- Must have a photo on file with CBP taken (1) within the last 10 years and (2) after turning 14;
- Must have previously submitted fingerprints to CBP.
Members renewing NEXUS, FAST, and SENTRI will gradually be incorporated into the pilot over the coming weeks. However, first-time TTP applicants are not currently eligible to participate.
Due to ongoing temporary restrictions on non-essential travel at U.S. land borders, interviews for NEXUS and FAST-North at enrollment centers in the U.S. and Canada remain suspended until further notice.
CBP will utilize Zoom as the teleconferencing platform, so ensure that your computer or smartphone has the app installed if you wish to join this pilot program. Additional information regarding eligibility and document requirements can be found on the CBP's website.
When inquired whether this program might become a permanent option in the future, a spokesperson from the agency stated only that, "CBP will keep monitoring the program's effectiveness and its impact on the enrollment process."
It’s important to note that TTP centers across the country are still scheduling in-person interviews, but be aware that it may take some time to secure an appointment.
