Away's Iconic Suitcases Have Just Received a Significant Upgrade
Since launching its first carry-on in 2016, Away has garnered a devoted fan base with its lightweight hard-shell suitcases in vibrant colors that are now a familiar sight in U.S. airports. Seven years on, this direct-to-consumer luggage brand is unveiling a comprehensive redesign of its classic polycarbonate spinners—available in both carry-on and checked sizes—based on customer insights gathered over the years.
Fundamentally, the new Away suitcase retains its recognizable hard polycarbonate shell featuring horizontal lines, four spinner wheels, a detachable laundry bag, and TSA-approved locks. However, Away has meticulously reassessed every aspect to craft the 'ideal suitcase.' This includes revamped zipper pulls, more durable handles, additional interior pockets, the incorporation of recycled polyester and leather elements, new color options, and even a new extra-large silhouette.
Naturally, this also entails new pricing. While all sizes of the redesigned luggage line are priced $40 higher than before—with carry-ons starting at $315—they still fall under $500, remaining competitively priced. (Carry-ons from rivals like July and Monos begin at $255, however.) These new bags can be found exclusively at awaytravel.com and in Away retail locations across the United States and Canada starting August 1.
Here’s everything else you should know about Away’s revamped luggage if you’re considering upgrading your bag.

Fresh and improved exterior design features
The standout new feature of Away’s redesign of its polycarbonate suitcases is the introduction of an underside grab handle, making it simpler to lift and retrieve the bags from overhead compartments or baggage carousels. Additionally, the TSA lock now boasts a sleeker profile that sits flush with the shell, while the zipper pulls have a new curved design that swivels and locks more effortlessly than before. Away has also revamped the trolley handles for improved comfort and stability, with a custom design that integrates seamlessly into the bag’s shell. Though subtle, the handles on the top and sides of the bag have been redesigned to sit flat against the shell for a more streamlined appearance.
However, Away has discontinued one feature: fans of the detachable USB battery packs from the original carry-ons may be disappointed to learn that they are no longer offered as optional add-ons.

What’s new on the inside
Inside the suitcases, the most striking update is the introduction of additional pockets. The previous compression system, which had one large zip pocket, is now restructured into two smaller mesh pockets at the front and a larger slip pocket at the back. Additionally, on the left side of the suitcase, the mesh closure now includes a zipped pocket. The signature compression board has been upgraded to include wider and sturdier straps, allowing travelers to compress their belongings more efficiently. The laundry bag has also been enlarged and now features a drawstring closure instead of the previous zipper, making it easier to hang out of the way.

Seven new shades
From the start, Away distinguished itself with a vibrant array of colors, allowing travelers to express their individuality amidst a sea of black suitcases. As part of the redesign, Away is unveiling seven fresh colors: Olive (earthy green), Chili (subdued red), Persimmon (vivid orange), Seafoam (soft green), Salt (off-white), Wave (deep blue), and Garnet (rich burgundy). The brand continues to offer its three classic neutral colors—black, navy, and coast (soft blue).
In contrast to the black interiors of the original suitcase models, the redesigned versions now feature interiors that match their exterior colors, along with coordinating luggage tags.

A shiny gloss finish
Away has previously offered suitcases with glossy shells in its limited-edition collections, but it is now adding the gloss finish as a permanent feature in its main line of luggage. (Rest assured, the signature matte finish will still be available.)
Currently, the gloss finish is offered in three colors: Wave, Salt, and Garnet. All three colors in the gloss finish are available across carry-on, larger carry-on, medium, and large suitcase sizes. This finish comes with a slight premium—$20 more per suitcase compared to the matte version.

A new hard-shell design
The Trunk is the first new hard-shell luggage design introduced by Away in years. With a capacity of 110 liters and dimensions of 31.3 x 17.0 x 13.7 inches, it stands as the largest suitcase offered by Away, featuring a 30/70 split construction instead of the typical clamshell design. This configuration allows for heavier items to be placed in the main compartment, keeping the top lighter, which makes it easier for customers to manage the suitcase without struggling with equal weight on both sides.
Initially, the Trunk is priced at $475 and comes in select colors (Black, Seafoam, and Olive) exclusively in a matte finish.
A focus on more sustainable design
In a bid to enhance the circularity of its products, Away states that it is now adopting a “sustainability-first lens” in its design approach. Simply put, this means Away is minimizing the use of virgin materials in its suitcases while boosting the recycled content in their components. The revamped collection features interiors lined with 100 percent recycled polyester, including the mesh and drawstring laundry bag, while the new luggage tags are crafted from 50 percent recycled leather.
