A beach in Byron Bay, a coastal town approximately 100 miles south of Brisbane, has experienced significant erosion as torrential rains continue to batter much of the country's eastern coastline, local officials report.
Powerful storms have devastated a 1,000-kilometer (621-mile) stretch of Australia's eastern coastline over the past several days, causing widespread damage in Queensland and northern New South Wales (NSW).
Intense winds and heavy rainfall have wreaked havoc on infrastructure and buildings, leading to flash floods in both states. Shorelines, especially in Byron Bay, have seen major erosion.
Main Beach, one of Byron Bay's most visited spots, has been hit hardest by the ongoing weather events.
Byron Shire Council's Director of Infrastructure Services, Phil Holloway, stated on December 15, 'Our Byron Bay beaches are facing severe erosion right now. The erosion has created steep drop-offs along all pedestrian pathways, and we've put up barriers to prevent accidents.'

Since Saturday, December 12, the region has recorded over 900mm (39.4 inches) of rainfall, according to the Australian Bureau of Meteorology.
Stephanie Heard, a spokesperson for the NSW State Emergency Service (SES), reported that the agency has received over 1,000 emergency calls and performed 18 flood rescues in the northern parts of the state.
The SES has issued evacuation orders for certain areas near Byron Bay due to the ongoing storm.
Steven Pearce, CEO of Surf Life Saving NSW, stated, 'This storm will dramatically alter the landscape of Byron Bay's beaches. The coastal damage has been severe, and most of the beaches have been lost.'
Byron Bay is known as a 'holiday paradise' for many Australians, with a surge of visitors flocking to the area during the Christmas season, according to Pearce.
In 2017, Dinogo Travel included Byron Bay in its list of the world's top beaches. The following year, actor Chris Hemsworth shared with Dinogo Travel that he had relocated his family from Los Angeles to Byron Bay for a more relaxed lifestyle.
Severe weather alerts remain in effect for parts of northern New South Wales, warning of heavy rain, unusually high tides, and dangerous surf conditions.
