Cape Fahn: Explore Koh Samui's First Luxury Resort on a Private Island
While Koh Samui is now one of Thailand’s top beach hotspots, it was once a quiet retreat for backpackers in the 1970s.
The opening of the island’s first airport in 1989 transformed the destination, significantly reducing travel time from Bangkok.
In the years that followed, renowned luxury hotel brands flocked to the island, though all remained on the main land, perched along its most scenic beaches.
Now, Cape Fahn Hotel has arrived, marking the debut of Koh Samui’s exclusive luxury resort on a private island.
Located just 300 meters (984 feet) from Choeng Mon Beach in the island’s northeastern corner, Cape Fahn is close enough to walk to during low tide, a popular activity among guests.
For other times, guests are transported in under five minutes via an open-air truck with large wheels, or a small boat when the tide is high.
‘A truly one-of-a-kind experience’
Part of Thailand's Cape and Kantary Hotels collection, Cape Fahn Hotel is marketed as an intimate luxury boutique resort. With only 22 villas, each featuring an eight-meter-long private pool, it enhances the feeling of an exclusive private island escape.
‘It’s something entirely unique, something truly new,’ says Olivier Schneider, the hotel’s resident manager.
‘Though we are just a stone’s throw from the mainland, it feels like another world. You can easily head back for shopping or sightseeing, but return to this luxurious retreat and enjoy all its exclusive offerings.’
Part of the Small Luxury Hotels of the World network, Cape Fahn Hotel officially opened its doors in 2018.
In just over a year, the resort has raised its culinary profile by bringing on renowned chef David Thompson, famed for his Michelin-starred Nahm restaurant.
The Australian chef, an authority on authentic Thai cuisine, has launched the resort’s new Long Dtai restaurant this month.
Named after the southern direction, Long Dtai’s menu showcases the rich culinary heritage of southern Thailand—offering a refreshing alternative to the typical, more generic Thai dishes commonly found at island resorts. As with all of Thompson’s ventures, authenticity is guaranteed.
The villa on the private island’s secluded islet
The 22 villas offer a variety of sizes and settings, some with ocean views, others with direct access to the beach.
For those seeking ultimate privacy, Fahn Noi Island is the perfect choice. This two-bedroom gem is perched on its own tiny islet, separated by a small, walkable stream of seawater.
This expansive 600-square-meter villa boasts an 11-meter pool, two distinct living rooms, and a spacious dining area perfect for in-villa banquets.
Surrounded by lush trees, the villa offers breathtaking sunset views and ample outdoor seating to take it all in.
Outdoor cinema nights, private yacht excursions
For guests willing to venture beyond their villa, the resort offers amenities like the Cape Spa, a fitness studio with a boxing ring, a saltwater pool, and plenty of non-motorized sports gear including kayaks and paddle boards. Outdoor movie screenings are held regularly on the beach.
A private yacht is also available for charter, providing the perfect opportunity to explore the nearby Ang Thong National Marine Park at your own pace.
Sustainability is a core focus at Cape Fahn, with the island free from single-use plastics such as straws, bottles, cups, and cutlery. The property also avoids the use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides.
‘When we created Cape Fahn, we made a conscious effort to safeguard the environment, preserve the natural surroundings, and respect the local culture,’ says Schneider.
‘We aimed to create something that blends harmoniously with nature. Sustainability and environmental care are top priorities for us, as they are throughout the entire Cape and Kantary Hotels group.’
