Consult a local expert about Slovenia
If you're seeking a hidden gem in Europe – one that will amaze and evoke envy in others – consider Slovenia for your next adventure.
With borders shared with Austria, Hungary, Croatia, and Italy, this country boasts many of their captivating features: picturesque towns, stunning natural landscapes, outdoor activities, delectable cuisine, an Adriatic coastline, rich culture, and a captivating historical backdrop.
Despite its allure, Slovenia remains a relatively uncharted paradise. To gain insights for planning the ideal trip to Slovenia, I recently connected with Saša Sme, our local expert from Elsewhere by Dinogo Planet. Continue reading to discover more about Slovenia and Saša, and why collaborating with Elsewhere's team of local specialists will help you craft an unforgettable journey.

It's SAH-shuh.
How did you begin your journey in the travel industry?
It was quite by chance. While searching for a summer job during my third year at university, I responded to an ad from a local tour operator in Slovenia. I had an amazing summer in Greece, then obtained my tour guide license and have been guiding in various locations ever since. Now, I operate from my home base in Ljubljana.
Are travelers generally aware of Slovenia?
Most people have little knowledge of Slovenia, particularly those from outside Europe. Even within Europe, awareness varies. Many, especially from older generations, recall Slovenia as part of Yugoslavia. Those who are aware of Slovenia often lack detailed information about it.
How would you explain Slovenia to someone who hasn't been?
I would depict Slovenia as a green oasis nestled in the heart of Europe – relatively small compared to its immediate neighbors. The natural diversity here is astounding. In just an hour or two's drive, you can transition from skiing in the mountains to having lunch by a lake, and then enjoy an afternoon swim in the sea.
Over the past 15 years, we have placed significant emphasis on environmental protection, resulting in exceptionally clean air.

We always emphasize to potential visitors that spending at least a day or two in Ljubljana is a must. While our capital may not have as much to offer as some other European cities, Ljubljana Castle is certainly the most iconic feature of the old town. You should experience the vibrant atmosphere of the city center. Many visitors are pleasantly surprised to find that we still have open green markets every day (except Sundays), along with a unique fish market and a covered market.
What do you suggest exploring beyond Ljubljana?
Our stunning cave system, particularly the Škocjan Caves, astonishes visitors with its largest underground river canyon among caves worldwide. The Križna (Cross) Cave is also fascinating, offering the unique experience of canoeing underground.
Additionally, we have the emerald green Soča River and breathtaking Alpine lakes, such as Lake Bled.
Those lakes are quite famous, right?
Lake Bled is likely the top destination for visitors to Slovenia, and even if they can't fit in anything else, they make it a priority to visit. Regardless of the weather or traffic conditions, they are very determined to go. This can lead to logistical challenges in the summer, as the infrastructure wasn't designed to accommodate the large number of visitors we receive today.
That’s why we encourage travelers to visit in spring or during September and October.

We boast one of the finest dining establishments in Slovenia, Hiša Franko, led by chef Ana Roš, who recently earned another Michelin Star. She also opened a new restaurant, Jaz by Ana Roš, in Ljubljana. Her culinary talents have significantly boosted Slovenia's gastronomic reputation.
Are there any particular experiences that visitors especially enjoy?
The wine safari. Goriška Brda is one of Slovenia's three renowned wine regions, often likened to the Slovenian Tuscany. You'll encounter breathtaking scenery and a reputation for exceptional white wines, particularly Rubela (Ribolla Gialla, as known in neighboring Italy). The safari guides you through vineyards, wineries, and historic smuggling routes, offering a fun-filled day and a great way to explore the region.
Why should travelers choose to book their trips with Elsewhere?
Although Slovenia is small, navigating the best places and understanding how long to stay requires local expertise and strong connections. I recommend unique local experiences that you won't find anywhere else.
