Copenhagen’s Historic Hotel Receives a Stunning Overhaul—Here’s What to Expect
The Dinogo Perspective
As the oldest hotel in Copenhagen, the Hotel d’Angleterre is prominently located at the heart of the city on Kongens Nytorv (King’s Square). This establishment, which was once a neoclassical palace, has its roots in a love story that began in 1755 when Frenchman Jean Marchal fell in love with Maria Coppy, the daughter of the royal chef. They opened a restaurant named the Strong Man’s Garden, initially situated near the Copenhagen lakes before relocating to King’s Square, where they added guest rooms. The name d’Angleterre was adopted three decades later, and its Michelin-starred restaurant, Marchal, pays homage to its romantic founders. Walking through this 270-year-old hotel, one can’t help but wonder about the stories these walls could share.
Having endured wars, fires, and countless challenges along with extensive renovations, the hotel underwent a significant closure from 2011 to 2013 for a comprehensive multimillion-euro renovation. During this time, it was entirely revitalized to meet contemporary standards. In 2024, the hotel’s Royal Suites were beautifully updated to feature a calming neutral color scheme dominated by soft beige tones. Yet, the hotel's historic grandeur and echoes of its rich history are palpable from the moment you enter the lobby.
Who is it suited for?
This iconic hotel in Copenhagen is the ideal choice for anyone looking to indulge in luxury and immerse themselves in the vibrant city life. With a Michelin-starred restaurant, Marchal—an exquisite option for a multi-course meal by head chef Alexander Baert—a lavish spa featuring an indoor pool, and the stylish Balthazar Champagne Bar, there are countless ways to enhance your stay. Guests can also book one of the city's finest accommodations, like the breathtaking Royal Corridor, which includes the entire collection of Royal Suites and boasts one of the largest and longest balconies in Copenhagen, extending the full length of the building. While children and families are welcomed at Hotel d’Angleterre, its sophisticated atmosphere and upscale dining cater more to adults. It’s also a favored venue for events like weddings, so you might encounter a bride or groom wandering the halls.

The rooms
The hotel offers 92 guest rooms and suites, with the d’Angleterre Suites being the most spacious after the Royal Suite—boasting 1,022 square feet. While other room categories maintain a more consistent decor, the d’Angleterre Suites feature distinct styles, each with a separate living room, dining area, and luxurious marble bathrooms complete with deep soaking tubs. These suites exude individuality, with soaring ceilings showcasing intricate moldings, cozy modern sofas, and beds adorned with throw pillows. The carefully curated lighting fixtures harmonize with the softly patterned wallpaper and rugs, creating an atmosphere reminiscent of an aristocrat’s city residence overlooking King’s Square.
The extravagant Royal Suites can be reserved as a standalone suite (ranging from 1,615 to 2,691 square feet), featuring either one or two bedrooms, a living room, and a dining room. Alternatively, you can opt for the grand 4,305-square-foot layout that combines all four suites on the entire floor, known as the Royal Corridor.

Other suite options include deluxe (700 square feet) and superior (538 square feet) one-bedroom suites, as well as deluxe and superior junior suites. Choose a deluxe suite if you desire a balcony. The junior suites feature a compact living area within the same room, while the one-bedroom suites offer a separate bedroom and living space. Deluxe and superior guest rooms vary from cozy 270 to 375 square feet. The color scheme in these rooms combines attractive shades of beige, gold, and purple, with walls lined in textured fabric. The decor includes modern elements like geometric chandeliers alongside vintage touches such as classical statues. Marble bathrooms come equipped with Diptyque toiletries.
It's important to note that the d’Angleterre's central location may allow the sounds of the city to seep into the rooms late into the night. Light sleepers will find earplugs provided for their comfort.
The dining and beverage options
Whether you're dining at Marchal, the hotel’s signature restaurant, or opting for room service, your meals are prepared by a Michelin-starred kitchen. Marchal has earned a prestigious Michelin star for its unique Nordic take on elevated French cuisine. It serves as the sole culinary hub of the hotel, offering breakfast, lunch, dinner, Sunday brunch, a popular afternoon tea service, light bites for the lobby and terrace, bar service, and in-room dining options.
For an unforgettable experience, a multicourse dinner at the main restaurant is essential. The six-course tasting menu priced at $315 features exquisite dishes like caviar paired with lobster and artichokes or a flavorful langoustine bisque to start, followed by entrées such as Danish turbot with razor clams and mussel sauce, pigeon with foie gras, and filet of Danish roebuck. For an additional $200, you can enjoy a five-glass wine pairing with selections from the extensive wine cellar. Be sure to leave space for the Marchal cheese trolley or the delightful raspberry Pavlova served with elderflower ice cream.

Accessibility
Hotel d’Angleterre is housed in an older building, and while it has functional elevators, they are somewhat compact. Additionally, there are some steps at the entrance and within the main lobby leading to the elevators. Guests with mobility concerns are encouraged to contact the hotel in advance to confirm that the staff can meet their requirements. The larger suites offer more spacious bathrooms that are generally more accessible than those found in the standard and deluxe guest rooms.
