How the Voting Process Works

Each year, for our World's Best Awards survey, T+L invites readers to share their insights on travel experiences worldwide — ranking the finest hotels, resorts, cities, islands, cruise ships, spas, airlines, and beyond. In 2024, over 186,000 T+L readers participated, casting more than 700,000 votes across over 8,700 properties (including hotels, cities, cruise lines, etc.).

Rental-car companies were evaluated based on the following criteria:

Choice of vehicles
Availability of cars
Location of rental services
Quality of service
Affordability

Respondents rated each aspect as excellent, above average, average, below average, or poor. The overall scores reflect the average of these ratings.

What Our Readers Adored

The secret to winning a rental-car customer's loyalty is straightforward — friendly and accommodating service. T+L readers appreciate it when rental-car companies employ staff who streamline their experience. One voter remarked, 'The staff truly differentiate it from a budget rental location. I've never had a bad experience,' in reference to No. 3 Enterprise Rent-A-Car, a WBA Hall of Fame inductee. Plus, a luxurious fleet is a definite bonus. 'Fantastic luxury vehicles at reasonable rates,' one voter shared about No. 2 Sixt.

In comparison to last year’s rankings, this year’s positions remained consistent at the top (National Car Rental), middle, and bottom (Hertz), while Sixt and Alamo (No. 4) exchanged ranks. Readers frequently praised numerous rental-car companies for their efficient international services. One voter shared, 'Using Enterprise in Scotland and in the Faroe Islands was exceptional. The cars were great and the service was top-notch.' Another highlighted superb service with Sixt across both sides of the Atlantic: “Outstanding service and staff. My preferred rental car choice in Europe and the Caribbean.'

Contrary to what its name may imply, this rental-car company is a global giant with over 1,500 locations across the globe. Customers rave about its outstanding Emerald Club loyalty program — especially the Emerald Aisle, which lets drivers choose any available vehicle for the price of a midsize car — alongside its excellent customer service. One voter remarked, 'National Car Rental is our first choice. We consistently find what we need and are continually impressed by the service level.' They added, 'A recent trip to Hawaii was no different in terms of customer care. We rented a full-size car and inquired about Jeep availability. Although all were booked, they graciously offered us a convertible BMW and said Merry Christmas!'
