Workers discovered that the walls were constructed from 'wattle and wicker' and unearthed ancient coins minted by landlords for trade with patrons.
The establishment originally began as an inn founded by Luain Mac Luighdeach, who assisted travelers crossing the River Shannon.
In 2004, this earned the pub a Guinness World Record as "The Oldest Public House in Ireland,” and to date, nothing older has been discovered, according to the team at Sean’s.
While the ancient coins and wall materials are now exhibited at the National Museum of Ireland, a portion remains on view at the pub itself.
Today, the bar features an open fireplace and sawdust-strewn floors, embracing the essence of an Irish pub with live music, great beer, and its own whiskey. They also host a daily talk on the history of whiskey distilling, which began in Athlone around the 6th century.
