Disney World is set to close two beloved attractions to introduce a new 'Cars' themed experience at Magic Kingdom.

During the Disney Experiences Showcase at D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event on Saturday evening, Josh D'Amaro, Chairman of Disney Experiences, announced a host of new lands, attractions, and experiences for Disney parks worldwide.
"Today, we revealed a comprehensive lineup of new experiences that are uniquely Disney," D'Amaro stated in his presentation. "We are actively working on all the new projects we announced, and fans will soon see them come to fruition."
As the excitement subsided following D'Amaro's announcements, fans quickly started speculating about the potential locations for these new lands and attractions.

A new "Cars" themed area is set to arrive in Frontierland at Disney World's Magic Kingdom, situated in the wilderness beyond Radiator Springs, which is already featured at Disney California Adventure Park.

The area will feature two exciting attractions based on the "Cars" movies, highlighting beloved characters like Lightning McQueen, Tow Mater, and their friends. One attraction is described as an exhilarating rally race, while the other is perfect for younger fans.
In conjunction with the announcement, Disney revealed that construction for this project is set to commence in 2025.
Although Walt Disney World Resort spans over 40 square miles, it is not limitless. Large-scale projects need to find their place, often resulting in the removal of older attractions. For example, the debut of Mickey & Minnie's Runaway Railway in early 2020 led to the closure of the beloved Great Movie Ride at Disney's Hollywood Studios.

Fans quickly learned that Disney World would be closing two classic attractions to pave the way for the "Cars" themed area. On Monday, Disney announced in a blog post that the Rivers of America, which includes the Liberty Square Riverboat and Tom Sawyer Island, will be transformed into expansive and rugged landscapes for a rally race featuring some of the most iconic racers.
For some fans, this may be hard to accept, but Disney recognizes the challenge of saying goodbye to attractions that have created joyful memories for countless visitors.
"We are excited to craft this unique Cars adventure and put our guests in the driver's seat as we—quite literally—explore a new frontier in Frontierland," stated Michael Hundgen, Walt Disney World portfolio executive producer at Walt Disney Imagineering, in the blog post. "Pioneering this new story involves embracing themes of exploration and adventure that motivate many of us to keep moving forward. Whenever we make changes to Magic Kingdom, we acknowledge the significant responsibility to do it right and share stories that resonate with our guests."
Disney recognizes the importance of allowing guests to bid farewell to their beloved attractions. Thus, the company announced that before construction begins next year, "guests will have ample time to enjoy the charm and nostalgia of Frontierland as it currently exists."
If you want to take one last ride on the Liberty Belle around the Rivers of America or explore the caves and bridges of Tom Sawyer Island, make sure to do so during your next visit to Disney World before they permanently close.
Sadly for dedicated Disney fans, these are not the only attractions facing closure at Disney World. D'Amaro revealed during the Disney Experiences Showcase that a villains-themed land is also coming to Magic Kingdom. Additionally, a "Monsters, Inc." land will be introduced at Disney's Hollywood Studios, while Disney's Animal Kingdom will see a new Tropical Americas area featuring attractions inspired by "Encanto" and "Indiana Jones."

Concept art and Disney's announcements suggest that the Dinosaur attraction and all of DinoLand U.S.A. are set to become as extinct as the dinosaurs themselves. In a blog post focused on this new area, Disney confirmed that "Construction is slated to begin this fall, with an opening planned for 2027 — but don’t worry, you’ll still have plenty of time to ride Dinosaur again (and snag that dino)."
We know that the new Disney villains-themed land is being planned for an undeveloped space located behind Big Thunder Mountain at Magic Kingdom. This suggests that no existing attractions will need to be removed to accommodate the upcoming devious fun.

Regarding the new "Monsters, Inc." land, Disney is keeping its exact location a secret, so we don’t yet know which attractions we may need to say goodbye to. Based on Monday’s announcement and Disney's past approach to attraction closures, guests will likely receive ample notice before any replacements occur.
We will keep you informed as soon as we have details about when and where these attractions will be constructed, so you can plan to say goodbye with one last ride.
