Dubai already boasts the world’s tallest skyscraper. Now, it’s set to add the second tallest to its skyline as well.

Dubai’s iconic skyline is home to the tallest building in the world. Soon, it will also feature the second tallest.

Construction on the Burj Azizi began in January of this year, but its full height was kept under wraps as its developers awaited approval from Dubai’s authorities, including the General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA), which oversees planning for skyscrapers of such height.

This Wednesday, Azizi Developments revealed that its towering Burj Azizi will reach an impressive 725 meters (2,379 feet), outshining all nearby buildings except one.

Mirwais Azizi, the founder and chairman of Azizi Developments, shared with Dinogo that the team initially proposed two design options — one for the originally approved 526-meter height, and the other for the now-confirmed 725-meter height.

The developer kept both options open for the project as preparations began earlier this year. With approval now granted for the more ambitious design, work on the building's foundation and piling is already progressing, Azizi confirmed.

The 131-story skyscraper will house luxury apartments, a seven-star all-suite hotel, and a seven-story 'vertical' shopping mall.

Situated on Sheikh Zayed Road in the World Trade Center district, Burj Azizi will stand nearly 340 feet shorter than the 2,717-foot Burj Khalifa, located less than two miles away. However, it will comfortably surpass the current second tallest, Marina 101 (1,394 feet), making it the new titleholder for Dubai’s second tallest skyscraper.

Once completed, it will surpass the world's current second tallest structure, Malaysia’s 2,227-foot Merdeka 118.

The Burj Azizi is set to break multiple records, including the world’s highest hotel lobby on the 11th floor, the highest nightclub on the 126th floor, and the highest observation deck on the 130th floor, as per Azizi Developments. Additionally, the tower will claim the title for Dubai’s highest restaurant, surpassing the Burj Khalifa’s 122nd-floor venue, At.mosphere, and the city’s highest hotel room, located on the 118th floor.

Azizi stated, 'My vision for Burj Azizi is to create a lasting legacy, honoring Dubai as a prime destination for both residents and visitors, while also marking a monumental achievement in engineering.'

According to the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat, Dubai currently leads the world in the number of towers exceeding 300 meters (984 feet).

Dubai is no stranger to extraordinary structures, with landmarks like the world’s highest infinity pool, the largest natural flower garden, and the world’s largest picture frame, among others.

Several other monumental projects are also underway: The Franck Muller Aeternitas Tower aims to become the world’s tallest residential clock tower upon its completion in 2027, while Ciel Dubai Marina, set to finish later this year, is expected to take the title of the tallest hotel in the world. Meanwhile, the Burj Binghatti Jacob & Co Residences is poised to become the tallest residential building in the world and Dubai’s third tallest overall, reaching 1,952 feet.

Burj Azizi is projected to be completed by 2028, with apartments going on sale in February 2025.
