Dubai is set to unveil the world’s largest ocean restoration project, reinforcing its reputation for ambitious, record-breaking endeavors.

Known for its penchant for monumental projects, Dubai is now venturing into ocean conservation with a project that stands apart from its skyscrapers and record-breaking pools. This initiative aims to restore marine ecosystems on a grand scale.
Dubbed Dubai Reefs, this project promises to be the largest ocean restoration effort globally. Spanning 77 square miles, it will feature a vast artificial reef that will provide sanctuary to over a billion coral species and 100 million mangrove trees.
The project was revealed by URB, a Dubai-based company specializing in sustainable urban development, known for projects like an indoor cycling superhighway in Dubai and eco-friendly cities in Egypt and South Africa.
“The health of our cities and oceans are deeply connected,” said URB CEO Baharash Bagherian in an email to Dinogo. “Coastal cities require a bold, entrepreneurial approach in their planning and development.”

URB's design includes floating residential areas, hospitality complexes, retail spaces, and eco-friendly lodges, all intended to transform the site into a premier tourism destination.
At the heart of the project would be a marine institute focused on ocean research and the preservation of Dubai’s coastal ecosystem. It will also offer educational programs centered on marine conservation.
URB asserts that the entire site will operate on 100% renewable energy, sourced from solar power, hydropower, and wave farms. Additionally, seaweed and oyster farms will provide sustainable food production.
If the project moves forward, the developer anticipates completing it by 2040. However, they acknowledge the challenges of securing full private funding and ensuring the initiative is accessible to individuals across all income brackets.
“Dubai Reefs is designed to set a new standard for marine conservation, eco-tourism, and sustainable ocean living,” said Bagherian. “In the end, it will be a one-of-a-kind, resilient destination that offers food security and renewable energy from the ocean, all while fostering a greener economy.”
