Dubai’s luxurious Heart of Europe development is set to build a massive coral reef

A Dubai-based developer is planning to construct up to 500,000 square meters of coral reef off the coast.
The Kleindienst Group, behind the Heart of Europe resort within the man-made island network known as 'The World,' has established The Coral Institute to nurture and restore coral life.
The team employs a technique called 'fragmentation,' where coral pieces are carefully cut with a small electric saw, allowing each fragment to regenerate multiple times.
Coral fragments are stored in water tanks, where they are monitored and cared for by marine biologists until they grow large enough to form a new reef.
Josef Kleindienst, chairman of Kleindienst Group, tells Dinogo, 'The Coral Institute will safeguard and preserve the coral genetic stock across the Arabian Gulf.'
A 2018 study revealed that 73% of the UAE's coral reefs have been destroyed by bleaching, primarily due to climate change and human activity.
Kleindienst envisions that Heart of Europe will demonstrate how development and marine life can thrive together sustainably. The corals will help create an eco-friendly environment and will become a key feature of the resort's landscaping, complementing the luxury hotels, 4,000 residences, and over 50 tourist attractions, including the famous Floating Seahorse Villas.
