The Origins of Darwin Festival The festival originated from the aftermath of Typhoon Tracy, which struck Darwin. The devastation caused by this natural disaster 40 years ago resulted in 68 fatalities and forced 25,000 residents to evacuate their homes. While many chose to leave Darwin for good, a determined few stayed behind to help rebuild Australia’s northernmost region.
In 1977, the Northern Territory's health director, Charles Gurd, proposed celebrating the city’s recovery with the Bougainvillea Festival. In 2003, under the leadership of artistic director Malcolm Blaylock, the event was renamed the Darwin Festival.
