Explore the 6 essential destinations recommended by Black women traveling solo.
Uncover the locations chosen by writer Stephanie Yeboah and her followers for the ultimate travel experience.
A few years back, while contemplating the ideal place for my annual birthday getaway, I reached out to my social media followers to find the best solo travel spots for Black women. Honestly, I was exhausted from searching online for genuine recommendations about safe places to visit without facing racial slurs or harassment.
I've previously shared my experiences as a Black traveler, detailing how the unexpected microaggressions (and more overt ones!) I faced often deterred me from returning to certain destinations. One of the major concerns for Black travelers when venturing abroad is safety. When you factor in the additional concerns women deal with daily, it’s understandable to feel apprehensive before making travel plans. Will I encounter racial profiling? Will strangers ask to touch my hair? Will I receive unwelcome glares in public?
Although no location can guarantee a perfect experience devoid of racial issues, many places exist where Black travelers have felt at ease exploring. Some destinations are particularly vibrant for travelers right now. I've compiled a mix of insights from fellow Black female travelers along with my own experiences; continue reading to discover some of the top recommended places to visit.
Ghana holds a special place in my heart, but Stephanie was eager to explore more of the world © PICHA Stock / Getty Images1. Accra, Ghana
Over 400 years have passed since the first slave ships set sail from Ghanaian shores to the Western world. Ghana has a rich history of politicians championing the Pan-African movement, and in 2019, the country began inviting individuals of African descent to visit with streamlined visa processes and a year-long schedule of culturally enriching events, branding it the 'Year of Return'. Since then, many have journeyed back to Ghana to reconnect with their heritage, making it an ideal time for Black women to visit. As someone of Ghanaian descent, I can confidently say it is one of the safest places I've had the pleasure to visit and live.

Although Portugal is often viewed as a side trip to Spain, it is a remarkable destination in its own right. With its rich diversity, Portugal is undoubtedly one of the best places for Black travelers. If it’s your first visit, I recommend exploring Lisbon, Porto, and Faro, all of which boast significant African populations.
Montreal is alive with festivals that honor Black culture © martinedoucet/ Getty Images3. Montreal, Canada
While Toronto boasts a vibrant Caribbean culture that attracts many, it can be quite hectic. For a more laid-back experience, consider Montreal! This city is rich in Afro-Caribbean culture and is renowned for its culinary scene, holding the title for the highest number of restaurants per capita in Canada, according to Geos Montreal. Each April, Vues d’Afrique hosts the Pan-Africa International Film Festival, celebrating African and Creole culture through cinema. If you're a music enthusiast, plan your trip in June to catch the annual Montreal Jazz Festival, featuring renowned Black jazz artists like Dianne Reeves and Buddy Guy.
Thailand's capital is famous for its warm hospitality © Witthaya Prasongsin / Getty Images4. Thailand
Thailand has undeniably emerged as a top travel hotspot for people of color, particularly Black women. I frequently see friends and influencers sharing photos of their spa days, beach outings, and visits to UNESCO World Heritage sites in Bangkok on Instagram, making me eager to experience it for myself. A friend who studied abroad in Thailand for a year spoke glowingly about her time there.
Similar to many Southeast Asian nations, Thailand is renowned for its warm hospitality. The locals are always eager to assist travelers. Moreover, it's a fantastic budget-friendly destination for those who need it. You can find affordable accommodations nearly everywhere, and if you stick to local street food instead of dining at restaurants, you'll be amazed at how far your money goes.

I’ve included Japan on this list due to its long-standing admiration for Black culture. Many nightclubs in Tokyo and other large cities feature hip-hop tracks pumping through their speakers. During my brief visit to Tokyo, I heard Cardi B more times in one evening than I ever thought possible. Beyond the cultural appreciation, you'll discover incredible cuisine and genuinely welcoming locals. As someone who often travels solo, having friendly locals to offer recommendations and guidance is invaluable.

Brazil is renowned for having one of the highest concentrations of African-descended people outside of Africa, with Nigerians leading the way. There’s a wealth of knowledge to gain from the way this nation has fused African and Portuguese cultures. In Rio, you'll find a vibrant and accessible art scene waiting for travelers to explore and engage with.
This destination is a must-visit for any traveler, and it’s reassuring to know you’ll be greeted with warmth, especially if you’re traveling solo. While some major cities may have safety concerns at night, daytime adventures should be trouble-free if you stick to well-lit and populated areas—advice that all women unfortunately have to remember wherever they go.
