One thing you can count on in Newport Beach: you'll likely find yourself on a boat © Visit Newport Beach1. Newport Beach, California
Ann Douglas Lott, Associate Editor
Vibes: Orange County somehow exudes both luxury and relaxation. In Newport Beach, you can spend your morning indulging in high-end shopping, lounging by the pool, or enjoying a spa day, and then in the afternoon, you can bike around Balboa Island or explore the scenic Crystal Cove State Park. Plus, it’s convenient—fly into SNA, and you’ll be just 20 minutes from your accommodations.
Do: Experience whale and dolphin watching on a Zodiac boat for an exhilarating adventure, feeling almost close enough to swim with them. If you prefer a more leisurely pace, enjoy a Duffy boat tour of the harbor complete with prosecco and charcuterie (I like to call it an HGTV cruise because of those stunning mansions!). They’ll even take you right to your dinner reservation.
Eat: Start your day with a breakfast burrito from Malibu Farm or enjoy coconut-macadamia pancakes at Beachcomber Café. For lunch or dinner, dive into seafood dishes like the creamy shrimp ravioli bianco at JOEY and flavorful gumbo at the waterfront Bluewater Grill. Don’t miss dessert—grab frozen bananas on Balboa Island from either Sugar 'n Spice or Dad's Donut Shop & Bakery.
Stay: Reserve a room at the newly opened Pendry Newport Beach. The spacious rooms feature a stunning pool deck perfect for sunbathing, and the restaurant and bar are vibrant social spots. It’s also just a short drive from the harbor and beach. Alternatively, try to book one of the charming beachfront cottages at Crystal Cove State Park for a unique experience.

Explore the cobblestone streets of Nantucket by renting a bike © Atlantide Phototravel / Getty Images2. Nantucket, Massachusetts

Vibes: Preppy, nautical, and coastal chic. Picture cobblestone streets lined with charming historic homes, lots of striped shirts, boat shoes, and sun hats. Enjoy long beach strolls and extensive bike paths.
Do: Rent a bike (or better yet, choose accommodations that provide them) to explore the island. Head to Sconset for the Bluff Walk—arrive early in the high season to avoid the crowds. This path offers close views of stunning shingled beach houses, some dating back to the 1800s. Stop by Cisco Brewery for craft beers, live music, outdoor games, and food trucks. Find vintage dresses and wine at Current Vintage. Dive into Nantucket’s history at the Whaling Museum.
Eat: Indulge in seafood whenever possible. Start your day with a hearty breakfast at the local diner Downyflake and don't skip the donut. For a healthier option, head to Lemon Press for smoothies and bowls. A delightful lunch spot is Topper’s at the Wauwinet—you can take a $25 boat ride from the downtown basin. They harvest their own oysters right outside and serve an excellent lobster roll. For dinner, Via Mare stands out for its food and decor—try the Boulevardier cocktail with baccala and boquerones, and don’t miss their surprisingly delicious kale salad, even if you’re not usually a fan.
Stay: I recently enjoyed a weekend at the Cottages at Nantucket Boat Basin. These newly updated dockside lodgings provide stunning harbor views, complimentary bikes, and kitchens for preparing your own meals and morning coffee. They offer a cozy, home-like atmosphere with the added perk of excellent service.

Discover Grand Traverse Bay from a stand-up paddle board © Pure Michigan3. Traverse City, Michigan
Sarah Stocking, Editor
Vibes: Chic yet casual, vibrant yet laid-back, Traverse exudes beach town charm that’s as captivating as a Taylor Swift love song: catchy, straightforward, and undeniably delightful.
Do: Embrace the water. Rent a kayak and spend your day soaking in the breathtaking views of the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. After exploring the quaint shops on Main Street or paddling through the crystal-clear waters, find a spot on the beach to enjoy the sunset. Bring a cocktail and stay long after dusk, as the stars fill the sky while your toes sink into the sand, creating a uniquely peaceful experience.
Eat: Be sure to book a table at Modern Bird. This region of Michigan boasts many small, local farms, and Modern Bird proudly uses locally sourced ingredients. The constantly evolving menu strikes a balance between elegance and comfort, making it the ideal dining choice for a weekend in Traverse City.
Stay: Aim for waterfront lodging whenever possible. I recommend the Bay Shore Resort. Its Victorian charm fits perfectly with the local ambiance, and waking up just steps away from the beach is an unbeatable experience.

Dining out on the Crystal Coast is quite an experience4. Crystal Coast (Southern Outer Banks), North Carolina
Ann Douglas Lott
Vibes: The less-traveled Outer Banks (still well worth a visit). With over 85 miles of stunning coastline, the beaches are peaceful, and outdoor adventures abound, all infused with charming small-town character.
Do: Spend a day enjoying the pristine sands of Emerald Isle or Atlantic Beach. Try a guided jet ski tour, explore the dune fields and salt marshes at Fort Macon State Park, kayak to Rachel Carson Reserve (watch for wild horses), or check out the lighthouse and stroll along the beach at Cape Lookout National Seashore.
Eat: Dining here emphasizes “dock-to-dish,” supporting local fishermen and farmers. In Beaufort, visit City Kitchen for seafood and stunning waterfront views. In Morehead City, try Circa 81 for Spanish tapas or enjoy locally sourced caviar (paired with fresh chives, dill, crème fraîche, and Pringles) at Prime Bistro and Wine Bar.
Stay: If you prefer not to use Airbnb, the Beaufort Hotel offers views of Taylor Creek and a true coastal North Carolina experience, complete with bike and golf cart rentals and a pool. Alternatively, consider the Pecan Tree Inn, a Victorian-style B&B featuring locally sourced breakfast and delightful afternoon treats (like homemade maple butter pecan cookies).

Vibes: A bohemian artist enclave intertwined with rich history, all set in a breathtaking natural landscape. It's a truly enchanting place, even in the Land of Enchantment.
Do: Explore Taos Pueblo, one of the oldest continuously inhabited communities in the US. Join a guided tour to discover the art and architecture of the Pueblo people and learn how they preserve their traditions.
Eat: Set within a charming 19th-century chapel, The Love Apple offers a romantic, candlelit atmosphere and stylish decor. Their menu features New Mexican dishes inspired by local farmers, with seasonal changes throughout the year.
Stay: For a cozy experience in town, La Dona Luz Inn features nine beautifully decorated rooms that capture the essence of Old Taos. For a touch of luxury, consider El Monte Sagrado. Enjoy the tranquil rooms nestled in the stunning Sangre De Cristo mountains for a perfect long weekend getaway. Enhance your stay with a spa treatment for ultimate rejuvenation.
