How to Access the American Airlines Admirals Club: Your Guide to the Airport Lounge

Citi partners with TPG for advertising.
The American Airlines Admirals Club provides a serene spot to unwind and recharge before your flight with American Airlines or its affiliates.
Within the lounge, enjoy complimentary snacks, free Wi-Fi, and a quiet space away from the airport terminal chaos. You'll find Admirals Clubs in nearly 50 airports around the globe, including major hubs like Chicago O'Hare International Airport (ORD) and Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW), as well as locations in non-hub airports like Toronto Pearson Airport (YYZ) and London's Heathrow Airport (LHR), among others.
There are several methods to gain entry to the Admirals Club before your upcoming flight — let’s explore your options in detail.
Accessing the Admirals Club for Same-Day Flights

No matter how you obtain access to the Admirals Club — whether through membership, ticket class, or AAdvantage status — it’s important to present a same-day boarding pass for an American flight, a Oneworld partner airline, or an Aer Lingus flight marketed by American.
This means if you are an Admirals Club member flying with United Airlines, you will not be granted access to the Admirals Club.
Lifetime Admirals Club members are exempt from the same-day flight condition and any airline limitations for club entry.
Gain Admirals Club Access via Credit Cards
One of the most effective ways to enter the Admirals Club is by applying for the Citi® / AAdvantage® Executive World Elite Mastercard® (check rates and fees), which offers a welcome bonus of 70,000 AAdvantage miles after you spend $7,000 within the first three months. Cardholders also enjoy a complimentary Admirals Club membership, which significantly offsets the $595 annual fee. This membership allows access for up to two guests or immediate family members traveling with you (provided they have a same-day boarding pass for an eligible flight).
The true advantage of this card lies in its generous authorized user policy. You can add up to three authorized users to your account for $175 each, with additional users also costing $175. Authorized users can access the Admirals Club when they have a same-day ticket on American or its partner airlines.
Because of this, many may even think about sharing the annual fee among multiple authorized users to lower lounge costs for everyone involved.
Keep in mind that authorized users do not receive a full membership; their access is limited to Admirals Club locations only, not partner lounges. Nevertheless, this remains a valuable option to enhance the travel experience for friends and family flying on American or its partner airlines, making it less stressful.
Join the Admirals Club with a Paid Membership

If applying for a credit card doesn't interest you, purchasing a membership is always an option. Here’s what you can expect to spend:
Type of membership | Annual price (individual membership) | Annual price (household membership — membership for you and your spouse or domestic partner) |
---|---|---|
AAdvantage member | $850 ($800 to renew) | $1,650 ($1,600 to renew) |
Gold | $825 ($775 to renew) | $1,625 ($1,575 to renew) |
Platinum | $800 ($750 to renew) | $1,600 ($1,550 to renew) |

Executive Platinum | $750 ($700 to renew) | $1,550 ($1,500 to renew) |
Concierge Key | Free |
You can also use miles to buy an Admirals Club membership at a rate of 1 cent per mile. According to TPG's June 2024 valuations, American miles hold a value of 1.7 cents, so redeeming them this way is generally not advised.
Type of membership | Annual price (individual membership, in miles) | Annual price (household membership — membership for you and your spouse or domestic partner, in miles) |

Admirals Club Day Pass

Some Admirals Club locations allow the use of one-day passes, which can be purchased for $79 or 7,900 AAdvantage miles. However, be prepared for the possibility of being denied access during peak times with a one-day pass.
Gain Admirals Club Access with Elite Status

The access rules for elite status are almost identical for both the Admirals Club and the Flagship Lounge, so if you have the option, it’s better to choose the Flagship Lounge.
American AAdvantage and Alaska Mileage Plan Elite Members
If you possess Oneworld Sapphire or Emerald status through American AAdvantage (via Platinum, Platinum Pro, or Executive Platinum tiers) or the Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan (via MVP Gold, 75K, or 100K status), you and a guest can enjoy access to Admirals Clubs or Flagship Lounges on qualifying international flights operated by American or a Oneworld partner, even in economy class.
Other Oneworld Elite Members
If you hold Oneworld Sapphire or Emerald status with a program other than AAdvantage or Mileage Plan, you and a guest can access an Admirals Club or Flagship Lounge when traveling on American or another Oneworld airline.
Loyalty Point Choice Rewards

The following Loyalty Point Rewards will be available in 2024 to assist you in gaining entry to an Admirals Club. Once you reach the specified point thresholds, you can select a reward. Here are the rewards related to Admirals Club access:
- 175,000 Loyalty Points: Six one-day passes.
- 250,000 Loyalty Points: Six one-day passes or an Admirals Club membership (note that upon reaching this level, you can choose from two Loyalty Point Choice Rewards, but the Admirals Club membership requires both selections).
- 400,000 Loyalty Points: An Admirals Club membership (requires two choices).
- 550,000 Loyalty Points: An Admirals Club membership (requires two choices).
Gain Admirals Club Access with Certain Fare Classes

Standard domestic first-class tickets do not grant access to Admirals Clubs, but the following ticket types do:
- Business and first-class tickets on international flights operated by American or Oneworld.
- Domestic Flagship-ticketed flights, including nonstop routes between: John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) and Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), John Wayne Airport (SNA) or San Francisco International Airport (SFO); Boston Logan International Airport (BOS) and LAX; Miami International Airport (MIA) and LAX.
If you're traveling through JFK, LAX, MIA, DFW, or ORD, it’s advisable to look for a Flagship Lounge. However, Admirals Club access can still benefit premium transcontinental travelers departing from Boston or San Francisco.
You cannot bring a guest with you when accessing the lounge this way, unless you are flying in international first class, in which case you may bring one guest as long as they are on the same flight.
Military Access to American Airlines' Admirals Club
U.S. military personnel in uniform, holding a valid military ID and same-day American Airlines boarding pass, can access the Admirals Club and most partner lounges. You may bring your immediate family or up to two guests along with you.
However, uniformed U.S. military members are not permitted entry into these two partner lounges:
- Aspire Lounge at San Diego International Airport (SAN)
- JAL Sakura Lounge at Daniel K. Inouye International Airport (HNL) in Honolulu
In Summary
There are several options for gaining access to American's Admirals Clubs. While the amenities offered can vary widely, these lounges are still a far better choice than sitting in a crowded terminal and paying over $5 for a bottle of water.
Make sure you fully understand the details of accessing the Flagship Lounge. After all, if you have Flagship Lounge access, you wouldn't want to end up at the Admirals Club by mistake.
If you're similar to most TPG team members who appreciate an Admirals Club membership, obtaining an American Airlines cobranded credit card that offers membership for you and access for your guests might be the best option.
