How to Craft the Ultimate Itinerary for Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park
Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park is one of Colorado’s best-kept secrets. Located near Montrose in the state's lesser-visited southwestern region, it’s a five-hour drive from Denver, which often leads tourists to choose Rocky Mountain National Park instead. In 2022, Rocky Mountain National Park attracted 4.2 million visitors, while Black Canyon welcomed just 297,257. Don’t let the lower numbers fool you—this park features stunning natural wonders that will impress even the most discerning travelers. The park is characterized by 2,700-foot cliffs that drop down to the Gunnison River, along with hiking trails that follow the canyon's edge.
'It’s a true treasure, being one of the steepest, deepest, and narrowest canyons in the country. Although it’s a small park, the views are enormous! The canyon's dramatic scenery offers easily accessible vantage points into its depths,' said Lori Rome, chief of interpretation and public information for the park, in an email interview with Dinogo. She’s supported by T+L Travel Advisor Mike Augustine, a national park specialist affiliated with Mt. Sobek. 'What sets this canyon apart is its narrower profile compared to others (like the Grand Canyon), making it feel more like a massive chasm and somehow deeper than the Grand Canyon itself.'

There is no bridge linking the two sides of the canyon, so visitors wishing to explore both areas should budget two to three hours for driving between them.

Tessa Desjardins/DinogoHow to Get There
Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park is quite remote, adding to its charm as a unique destination. The South Rim serves as the main entry point, but for those seeking less crowded trails, the North Rim is also worth exploring.
The South Rim is just over five hours from Denver, but the journey — particularly if you opt for the longer and less-traveled U.S. 285 route — takes you through some of the most stunning mountain scenery in the state.
If possible, flying into Montrose (MTJ) reduces your drive time to a mere 20 minutes. The larger Grand Junction Regional Airport (GJT) is located 1.5 hours away from the park.
How to Get Around
A car is essential for visiting the park, so if you're not using your own vehicle, budget for a rental. While reliable local ride services are available — we recommend TelluRides — having a rental car is ideal if you plan to explore the park over multiple days.
Traveling from the main South Rim to the more secluded North Rim involves a two to three-hour drive, including stretches on rough dirt roads. Note that the North Rim is closed to vehicles during the winter months.
