Certain states evoke distinct images in our minds. For instance, California brings to mind redwoods, while my own Virginia conjures up mountains. Before visiting Idaho, I only thought of potatoes, but my trip completely reshaped that perception. Whether it was soaking in hot springs during a snowstorm or experiencing skiing for the first time, I found myself enchanted by McCall, Idaho.

Idaho possesses a unique charm that continuously draws people in, much like it did for longtime resident Lisa Whisnant. Initially, McCall was just a brief stop for a sweet treat and to appreciate the stunning views of Payette Lake. "McCall has always intrigued me," she recalls. "I dreamed of living here one day." A few years later, she seized the chance to become a whitewater rafting guide with Canyons River Company in McCall, and for the last forty years, she has actively contributed to the community.

Chris Weber, a local fishing guide, may be new to McCall, having only lived there for a few years, but he was captivated just like many others. What started as fishing excursions transformed into a permanent relocation. "It's a premier fishing spot set against stunning mountains," he shares. "It's even better than what you see in picture books." Even if you're not considering moving, the plethora of outdoor adventures—like snowmobiling in winter and hiking in summer—might just inspire you to visit and linger a bit longer.

Hotel McCall: Since 1904, Hotel McCall has welcomed guests, making it the perfect place for your stay with its prime location in the heart of the action. The hotel features 22 rooms, ranging from two-queen suites to desirable lakefront condos, including options that are ADA-compliant and pet-friendly. Unwind at the spa, take a dip in the indoor pool, and enjoy dining at the on-site fusion restaurant.

Tamarack Resort: Whether you're traveling solo or with a group, Tamarack Resort offers accommodations to suit various party sizes. "Tamarack is continuously expanding its hotels, and with its ski resort vibe, the lodging options are top-notch," shares Weber. I had the pleasure of staying in a ski-in, ski-out room, but there are also privately owned chalets available.

Burgdorf Hot Springs: For a true wilderness escape, make sure to include Burgdorf Hot Springs in your plans. Stay warm in a room equipped with a woodstove (firewood provided), or embrace the summer heat as cabins are without electricity. It's a rustic experience, but Weber notes that many of his fishing clients rave about their time at Burgdorf.

Shore Lodge: If waterfront activities are what you seek, Shore Lodge on Payette Lake is the place to be. Rent a stand-up paddleboard, enjoy a round of golf on the 18-hole course, or explore on a complimentary bike. "Summer visits to Shore Lodge are a blast, sitting by the water for lunch," says Whisnant. Winter is just as lively, with guests enjoying the hot tubs or borrowing snowshoes for outdoor adventures.

Top Activities to Experience

Hit the slopes on powdery mountains: One of McCall's main attractions is its skiing. "If you're a fan of houses blanketed in two feet of snow and soft powder to ski on, McCall [offers] a fantastic lifestyle," says Weber. Navigate down one of the 58 plush trails at Tamarack Resort and swing by Bumps & Brews for a local beer. Other winter activities include skiing, snowboarding, and tubing at Brundage Mountain Resort, beloved by Bella Kitchen owner and longtime local Lisa Wood. "In the winter, we hit the slopes at Brundage as often as we can," she shares.

Arrange a guided fishing adventure: Ice fishing is among my most unforgettable experiences in rural Idaho. McCall attracts visitors eager to brave the cold while tempting fish to their hooks. "The first time I visited Idaho, we fished for perch in Lake Cascade," Weber recounts. He notes that the prime fishing season is in May and June when the fish are particularly active. He adds, "It's as good as it gets, and you really can't go wrong."

Snowmobile your way to hot springs: One of the best ways to take in the stunning winter landscape is by booking a guided snowmobile tour with CM Backcountry Rentals & Adventures. The snow gear provided keeps you warm as you zip through Idaho's beautiful scenery. Make a pit stop for comfort food at the Secesh Stage Stop, where dollar bills flutter on the walls. Afterward, unwind in the naturally heated waters of Burgdorf Hot Springs, surrounded by breathtaking views of the snowy hills.

Hunt for mushrooms: Often considered McCall's unofficial food, mushrooms thrive during warm days followed by cool nights. "Spring is an ideal time for mushroom foraging," Wood recommends. "This fall, the mushrooms were abundant, and we could simply stroll through our neighborhood to discover beautiful boletus mushrooms." Local chefs, like Gary Kucy from Rupert's at Hotel McCall, frequently incorporate these foraged delights into their seasonal menus.

Gallery Fifty-Five: Part store, part exhibition space, Gallery Fifty-Five serves as a cooperative venue for purchasing souvenirs or stocking up your gift closet. "Gallery Fifty-Five showcases the creative talent our area has to offer," says Wood. Here, local artists feature everything from handmade jewelry to original paintings. 

McPaws Thrift Store: Whether you’re looking to adopt a pet — adoptable animals are available — or in need of pre-owned snow gear, McPaws Thrift Store is your go-to spot. "I appreciate that the shop supports animals in need or searching for homes," says Whisnant. Conveniently located downtown, it was one of my favorite shopping destinations in McCall. 

Bella Kitchen: Founded in 2002 by Wood and her husband, Bella Kitchen is the perfect place to stock up on kitchen essentials or pick up a wine opener. For those who love beautiful stationery, they offer items from Rifle Paper Co.

McCall Sports: Explore both the new and gently used sections at McCall Sports to discover the ideal recreational equipment. "They have a fantastic selection of secondhand skis and bikes," Weber notes. "It's one of the coolest shops I’ve ever visited."

Backcountry Boutique: "I adore Backcountry Boutique for its fantastic clothing and gift options," shares Wood. Swing by this store to pick up cozy alpaca socks for snowmobiling or to chat with the friendly locals. This locally owned shop even has a toy corner for the little ones.

Flight of Fancy: If you’re passing through Donnelly on your way to or from Tamarack Resort, don’t miss this charming bakery called Flight of Fancy, as recommended by Whisnant. Their grab-and-go menu offers everything from hearty breakfast sandwiches to delightful pastries, but you can also enjoy your meal in the cozy atmosphere of this quaint house. For a sweet stop in McCall itself, Whisnant suggests Stacey Cakes.

Salmon River Brewery: No visit to McCall is complete without stopping at the local brewery, a favorite among all three local experts. "We frequently dine at Salmon River Brewery for excellent pub fare," shares Wood. My husband and I discovered it while exploring downtown, and I can confirm that it offers wonderful comfort food and delicious brews in a rustic setting.

Blue Moon Yurt: Open seasonally by reservation, the enchanting Blue Moon Yurt offers a unique dining experience where guests snowshoe through the woods to reach their meal. Whisnant often dreamed of creating a winter business that fostered community. "The culinary experience evolved from river guiding," she explains. Together with her team of river guides, they prepare meals over open coals and serve them inside the cozy yurt.

Ragazza Di Bufalo: Located just twenty minutes south of McCall in Donnelly, Ragazza Di Bufalo is Weber's go-to spot for celebrations. "It's around $100 per couple, but the Italian cuisine is outstanding," he shares. The moment you enter, the upscale ambiance envelops you. Indulge in bison lasagna made with local meat from Shoemaker Bison Ranch, or enjoy smoked salmon pasta and braised bison short ribs after a day on the slopes.

Ideal Visiting Times

There's never a bad time to explore McCall, so plan your getaway around your favorite activities. If cold weather isn't your thing, a winter agenda packed with thrilling snowmobiling, skiing, and ice fishing might not appeal to you. Fortunately, there are plenty of activities for those who prefer warmer temperatures. 

In the summer, enjoy a few days of white-water rafting, golfing, boating on the lake, or hiking to breathtaking viewpoints. McCall invites outdoor enthusiasts year-round. "It’s a winter wonderland, but it’s also a summer destination," shares Whisnant. She emphasizes that McCall has always been a hub for recreation, so regardless of when you visit, be ready to connect with nature.

How to Reach McCall

As Whisnant puts it, "It’s Boise’s backyard," making flying into Boise (BOI) and renting a car the simplest way to reach McCall. The drive takes about 2.5 hours, but watching the city transform into a landscape of mountains and evergreens makes the trip worthwhile. Several major car rental agencies, including Budget and Enterprise, are conveniently located at the airport, making your travel seamless.

Getting Around

Opting to rent a car gives you a convenient way to explore the area, but there are other exciting options as well. You can rent a snowmobile or motorboat to discover the landscape. If you choose to stay at Hotel McCall, the downtown area is easily walkable. "You can stroll everywhere," Whisnant notes. In winter, renting snowshoes at Gravity Sports will help you navigate safely through the ice and snow.
