How Traveling Transformed My Outlook on Life
Sometimes, a journey can completely change your life. This traveler is proof.
Many people jump into their careers right after graduation, but Kylie had a different plan. She set off to Australia and ended up staying for over a year!
From epic surf spots to music festivals, Kylie embraced it all. But the biggest takeaway was how travel shifted her perspective. We caught up with her to explore why this trip was life-changing and how you, too, can transform your mindset through travel.
Travel can introduce you to lifelong hobbies. What inspired you to travel to Australia?
When I graduated from the University of Oregon, most of my peers were focused on jumping into 9-to-5 jobs. My thought was, “Why rush? I’ll be working my whole life!”
I’d traveled a lot before and loved meeting new people and experiencing different cultures, but language barriers had sometimes made it tough.
That’s why Australia was ideal. I booked a one-way ticket, ready to figure things out as I went—and it turned out to be an incredible experience.
Incredible! What kind of work did you find once you arrived?
I had always been in the hospitality industry, so after some travel and making friends, I started working at a beachside seafood restaurant in Sydney.
While working, Kylie also gained knowledge about Australian wines. From there, I delved into the wine industry and even helped organize events for a wine company. It was a fantastic learning experience, and the pay was great too, allowing me to extend my stay and even take a trip to New Zealand!
How did spending an extended period in a foreign country alter your perspective?
It pushed me out of my comfort zone and compelled me to connect with new people, forge friendships, and navigate life independently. Every person you meet has something to teach you, and you’re sure to form genuine connections along the way.
Kylie’s friends from Chile are excited to guide her on their upcoming adventure to Patagonia.I met three women from Chile during my travels, and we’ve remained close friends; we even reunited in Costa Rica! We’re also planning a trip to Patagonia soon—none of this would have happened without my travels. Additionally, I met a wonderful friend on a long bus ride to a concert, and we’re still best friends today!
My entire experience helped me understand that I want to spend my time with fellow open-minded travelers. I now work for a company that recognizes employees and assists them in taking trips throughout the U.S. and Mexico—so my time in Australia has guided me toward my career!
How has this new perspective impacted your daily life?
I felt an immense support from everyone I met during my travels, regardless of the circumstances, and I strive to maintain that mentality. In my job, I make a conscious effort to be present and connect personally, rather than just focusing on work.
It also taught me the importance of seeking out those who support my passion for adventure.
Do you have any final advice for those planning their next trip?
It's easy to get caught up in your own little bubble, but travel allows you to expand your horizons. As long as you're willing to step outside your comfort zone, keep an open mind, and engage with everyone you encounter, you can gain new perspectives wherever you go!
