Idaho's 'Blue Heart Spring' Is One of the State's Best-kept Secrets — Featuring Stunning, Caribbean-blue Waters Hidden Behind a Forested Passageway
When you picture a vibrant oasis of blue water, Idaho likely doesn't come to mind. However, the state conceals such a treasure — accessible only by boat. Idaho’s Blue Heart Spring is undoubtedly one of the most visually breathtaking natural springs in the U.S., yet it remains unknown to many due to its remote, water-bound location and cool temperatures (to clarify, this is not a hot spring). To reach it, adventurers must paddle up the Snake River near the quaint town of Buhl, Idaho. Along the way, you'll encounter the Box Canyon confluence, where the icy blue waters of Box Canyon blend with those of the Snake River.

Even on the hottest days, the temperature hovers around 58 degrees, making it an ideal spot for a refreshing summer swim. Whether you decide to take a dip or remain on your watercraft, don't forget to look through the transparent waters to see the sandy bottom bubbling as water surges from the ground.
The best way to reach Blue Heart Spring is by kayak or paddleboard, as motorboats are not allowed in this serene oasis. The optimal launch point is near Banbury Rentals, which provides paddleboards and kayaks, along with guided day trips. It takes about 35 to 45 minutes to paddle from Banbury to the passage leading to Blue Heart Spring.
Although Blue Heart Spring is still relatively undiscovered, it's a beloved spot among locals, so visiting on a weekday is recommended to avoid crowds — and remember to take your trash with you when you leave.
Just a few miles west of Blue Heart Spring lies Miracle Hot Springs, a geothermal oasis that will quickly warm you up after your dip in the chilly waters of Blue Heart Spring. Miracle Hot Springs features four general admission pools, 15 private pools, and communal soaking areas. Overnight visitors can choose from a variety of accommodations, including geodesic domes, a rental home, and campsites.
Buhl, Idaho, the nearest town to both Blue Heart Spring and Miracle Hot Springs, is under two hours' drive from Boise, Idaho.
