Weather can be highly unpredictable. When you plan your cruise vacation months, or even over a year, in advance, it’s impossible to foresee every possible outcome.
Cruises are typically organized long before the actual departure, and unfortunately, even the best-laid plans can go awry. This was evident in 2019 when passengers on a Norwegian Cruise Line ship protested after bad weather caused them to miss several stops on their European journey.
The cruise on Norwegian Spirit, which accommodates just over 2,000 guests, departed from Southampton, England, with planned stops in the Netherlands, Norway, and Iceland—all of which were skipped. A spokesperson for the cruise line informed The New York Times that “severe weather conditions” led to the changes, and the cruise line offered travelers a 25 percent discount on a future cruise. However, passengers who experienced other issues, like clogged toilets, protested for a full refund.
While weather can be as unpredictable as a lottery draw, adjusting an itinerary is a calculated choice, as stated by Colleen McDaniel, editor-in-chief of Cruise Critic, in her interview with Dinogo.
“For cruise lines, ensuring guest safety is their top priority,” McDaniel stated. “The decision isn’t made solely by the onboard crew; it involves a team assessing the latest weather trends and exploring available options or alternatives.”
While it’s undoubtedly frustrating to miss several scheduled stops, McDaniel noted that cruise lines are frequently not required to provide a refund.

While that may not sit well with some passengers, they are indeed covered by that contract.”
What should you do if you’ve packed your bags, booked your flights, and set your out-of-office reply for your dream cruise, only to have the weather spoil your plans? While storms can complicate cruises, here are some tips to plan ahead and maximize your experience.
Stay informed about the situation at all times.
McDaniel emphasized the importance of paying attention to announcements and being fully aware of the conditions on board. It’s crucial to obtain the latest information from the staff who are most knowledgeable, rather than relying on rumors.
Although your itinerary might change, cruises are seldom canceled due to storms. Ships are built to navigate rough waters and can be rerouted for safety. Once you’re aboard, any updates regarding ports will be communicated through the ship’s intercom or via notices left in your stateroom.
Consider using a travel agent.
“This individual acts as your travel advocate,” she explained. “They have established relationships with the cruise line, and when issues arise, they can step in on your behalf.”
Although cruise lines are not required to issue refunds, you can often receive a small compensation for any missed ports.
Keep everything organized.
If you're presented with any form of compensation, McDaniel suggests documenting all relevant details.
“Collect names and note the specifics of the compensation,” she advised, emphasizing the need for patience: “There are many cruise ships in port at any given time, so it may take a while to get a response.”
Avoid seasickness.
Cruising in rough weather can trigger seasickness, so it's essential to take quick action to avoid being stuck in your cabin with nausea. Options include taking over-the-counter medications like Dramamine or Bonine, using acupressure wristbands, or applying a patch like Transderm Scop before boarding.
Consider alternative activities.
While some excursions, such as helicopter rides or kayaking trips, may be canceled, you can still enjoy activities like shopping, visiting a museum, or taking a bus tour. Your cruise line is likely to refund any excursions booked through them, while private tour operators typically provide refunds upon request.
Since outdoor activities on the ship, such as pools and rock climbing walls, may not be available, it's best to find indoor options. The ship usually offers extra programming, so keep an ear out for announcements and try to access the spa, evening entertainment, or specialty restaurants, as these tend to fill up quickly.
Remember, you have the option to disembark.
If your cruise isn't meeting your expectations or you're not enjoying yourself, you can choose to leave the ship early as a last option.
“Ultimately, if you feel you're not experiencing the cruise you desire, you have the choice to depart,” McDaniel noted, “but the responsibility will be yours.”
