Typically, the "best weather" refers to times when it’s most likely to be sunny and mild. However, in Colorado, where many seek out fresh powder, you'll need to refine your definition of "best weather" a bit more specifically.

Ideal Times for Skiing

If you're aiming for an excellent day on the slopes, your prime months for snowfall will be during winter. While some areas in Colorado have extended ski seasons from October to May (or beyond), the majority of ski resorts operate from late November to early April, depending on snow conditions. Nonetheless, early and late season weather can be quite unpredictable regarding snow amounts and quality.

February and March are typically the snowiest months across most of Colorado, while January usually ranks as the coldest month based on historical averages. Personally, I really enjoy skiing in late February. By that time, snow accumulations should be substantial, and temperatures are generally still well below freezing, avoiding the harshest chill of winter.

Ideal Times for Hiking and White Water Rafting

For those seeking warm days and cool nights, the best months in Colorado are from mid-June to September, though be aware that early June and even late September can still present challenges at higher elevations. If your goal is to hike and explore areas like Rocky Mountain National Park, summer provides the most favorable weather conditions.

Summer is also the prime season for white water rafting in Colorado, with the caveat that the most thrilling rapids typically occur in late spring and early summer as snowmelt swells the rivers, while a calmer experience is more commonly found later in the summer.

The transitional months of April, May, and late October can bring the most unpredictable weather in Colorado throughout the year, making these periods ones you might want to skip if you prefer stable conditions.

When to Visit Colorado to Sidestep the Crowds

Keep in mind those transitional or shoulder season months I mentioned earlier that can be a bit tricky due to unpredictable weather. If your goal is to avoid crowds, then you might want to focus on April, May, and from October to mid-December, as these tend to be the least busy months. Many visitors flock to the warmth of summer or the snowy allure of winter.

However, if you're secretly hoping for exceptional early or late-season snow, luck can be on your side. In 2019, Steamboat Springs received 44 inches of snow mid-mountain in October, leading the ski resort to kick off its season earlier than planned.

Conversely, a delayed onset of fall can lead to the leaves reaching their peak colors in early to mid-October, offering a stunning display of aspen gold for the fortunate travelers visiting during this traditional shoulder season.

The most budget-friendly times for hotel stays in Colorado vary depending on your destination.

For instance, December typically ranks as the least expensive month for hotel stays in Denver, as noted by Kayak. This drop in prices is likely due to a decrease in business travel during that month.

In contrast, if you consider a ski resort like Vail, Aspen, or Breckenridge, December often sees some of the highest rates of the year, particularly in the latter half of the month.

According to Kayak data, Vail offers its most affordable hotel rates in May, averaging $142 per night, whereas December sees an average cost of $668 per night, making it the prime time to utilize those hotel points during ski season.
