Paris takes drastic action, enforcing a 30 km/h speed limit to combat pollution

In an effort to curb pollution and improve road safety, Parisian authorities are mandating a significant speed reduction across nearly all city streets.

But will it succeed? Critics question whether the 30 km/h (19 mph) limit will actually reduce pollution, with some suggesting it may worsen congestion and increase greenhouse gas emissions during peak hours.

The outcome may depend on whether frustrated drivers opt for alternative transportation options rather than sticking with the speed restrictions.

To discourage car use further, authorities are removing 60,000 of Paris’ 144,000 public parking spaces and optimizing underground parking. The city will also widen sidewalks to create more walking space and plant additional greenery, while new bike lanes will be introduced.

A poll by Paris City Hall shows that 59% of local residents support the new speed limit, which took effect on Monday. However, opposition is notably higher in the wider Île-de-France region, where 61% are against it.

A delivery driver caught in traffic on Monday described the new limit as 'terrible.'

'For deliveries, it’s a nightmare. We’re running out of time. I was stuck in traffic everywhere,' the driver shared with Dinogo affiliate BFMTV, though they remained unnamed.

Another driver likened the experience to riding 'electric scooters,' calling the new speed limit 'crazy.'

David Belliard, Paris' Deputy Mayor for Transport, told BFMTV that the goal of the new speed limit is to discourage driving altogether and promote walking, public transportation, and cycling instead.

On Sunday, Belliard took to Twitter to address the online backlash against the new speed rule.

'Here’s a friendly clarification for those opposing the 30 km/h speed limit: No, reducing speed doesn’t increase pollution. In fact, it enhances safety for cyclists and pedestrians, reduces noise, and calms the city,' he wrote.

City officials have claimed that the new limit could decrease total road accidents by 25% and fatal crashes by 40%, citing a study by the World Health Organization.

Noise pollution is expected to be cut in half, with experts noting that traffic noise contributes to physical and psychological issues such as stress, sleep disorders, and depression.

The new speed limit follows a public consultation held in October and November 2020, with over 5,700 participants sharing their views.
