Unavoidable expenses like Wi-Fi, electricity, and insurance can really add up. Plus, switching utility providers or moving could mean additional charges on top of these ongoing payments.
Paying your bills with a credit card might not always fit into standard bonus categories. If you're trying to make the most of every dollar spent and save where possible, you might think this is a lost opportunity.
Fortunately, it's not always the case. With the right credit cards, you can take advantage of targeted deals from providers like American Express or Chase to save on utility bills. Plus, if you have the Bilt Mastercard® (check rates and fees), you can earn double points on select payments made on Bilt Rent Day. Just remember, Bilt Mastercard users need to make at least five purchases per statement period to qualify for points (see rewards and benefits).
Here's how I’m cutting costs on my utility bills every month.
Earn points and cash back on your utility payments.
Since I’m in the middle of moving, saving every penny and earning extra points is key for me.
I’ve been taking advantage of offers from my American Express® Gold Card and Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card, plus leveraging Rent Day benefits with the Bilt Rewards program.
Since many of these deals are personalized, you’ll need to check your own accounts to see if you're eligible for the same offers I’ve used. Don’t forget, you must activate these deals before you can redeem them.
I took advantage of three Amex Offers that helped me save on two recent bills. One of them gave me $5 back when I spent $50 or more on my cable or internet bill by paying directly with my Amex card.
AMERICANEXPRESS.COMAfter making a $55 payment for AT&T Fiber using my Amex Gold, I saw the statement credit show up a few days later. I plan to use this offer for the next couple of months until my move is complete in July.
AMERICANEXPRESS.COMI also redeemed two Amex Offers for my first renters insurance payment. I was eligible for two separate deals that gave me 10% and 5% back on my insurance bills.
My first renters insurance bill came to $48.34. By activating both offers before paying, I received a total of $7.25 back in two separate statement credits.
AMERICANEXPRESS.COMI’m also planning to set up a new AT&T Fiber account for Wi-Fi when I move. Here’s my strategy: I’ll use my Chase credit card to save on this purchase.
Thanks to a Chase Offer I activated, I’ll be using my Sapphire Preferred card to get $50 cash back on my subscription purchase.
CHASE.COMLastly, since I don’t have any cash-back offers or cards that earn bonus points on electricity, I use my Bilt Mastercard on Rent Day to pay for my power bill.
Every purchase made on the first of the month with my Bilt Mastercard earns double Bilt Points. For my most recent $59.85 bill, I earned 118 points. Bilt points can be transferred to a variety of loyalty programs, such as World of Hyatt and Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan.
BILTREWARDS.COMBILTREWARDS.COMAlthough the payment was posted on May 2, I still received double points a little over a week later, as I made the payment on May 1.
Bottom line
Don’t assume you can't earn cash back or bonus points on your monthly bills. While activating these offers takes a bit of effort, the rewards make it worthwhile.
Whether you’re saving or aiming for points to redeem, check your credit card offers to see if you qualify for these deals. Also, be sure to take advantage of Rent Day benefits if you have a Bilt Mastercard.
And always remember to activate any credit card offer before you redeem it.
