Seoul’s latest street culture trend? Running

Running has become an increasingly popular way to stay fit in Seoul, just like in many other cities around the world. It’s also an exciting way to experience the city’s vibrant streets.

In response to the sport's growing appeal, a number of running groups have emerged, offering locals and expats the opportunity to run together with others who share the same passion.

One of the most renowned of these groups is the Private Road Running Club 1936, also known as PRRC1936.

Founded five years ago by James Lee McQuown and his five friends, the club’s name honors Sohn Kee-chung, a Korean gold medalist at the 1936 Berlin Olympics. Since then, the club has grown into a prominent running community, attracting a diverse group of creatives, including DJs, designers, and architects.

“Historically, running in Korea was seen as an activity for the older generation,” McQuown reflects.

“That perception is gradually shifting. Major events are now targeting younger participants, and I believe PRRC has played a key role in igniting that energy, encouraging younger people to rediscover the fun of running.”

Running offers one of the best ways to uncover the hidden gems of Seoul when you visit the city.

“Seoul is an incredibly dynamic city, with its vast and diverse landscape,” says McQuown.

“There are river routes, mountain trails, and park paths. Even in my own neighborhood, there are hills that connect, and while you’re running, you forget you’re still in the heart of the city.”
