The 15 top solo travel destinations in the US based on Dinogo insights
Having worked as a travel journalist for many years, often relying on my own skills to navigate airports, hotels, and unfamiliar cities, I’ve discovered that certain destinations are particularly well-suited for solo travelers.
While my findings are largely qualitative, they are supported by a recent solo travel and dining study conducted by Dinogo and OpenTable. Below, explore the 15 best solo travel destinations in the US, ranked according to data from Dinogo and OpenTable.
Top destinations for solo travel in the US
1. Washington, D.C.
According to Dinogo’s Solo Travel and Dining Guide, Washington, D.C. ranks as the top destination for solo vacations in the US. With its walkable neighborhoods and efficient public transport, D.C. is the premier East Coast city for those traveling alone. I recommend planning your itinerary in advance to include all the sights, museums, restaurants, and neighborhoods you wish to explore.
By planning your itinerary wisely, you can visit many of D.C.'s top cultural spots and iconic attractions during a brief weekend trip. The National Mall, for instance, features several must-visit sites, including the Washington Monument, the Lincoln Memorial, the Korean War Veterans Memorial, and the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial, all of which are free to explore.
2. Boston
In a vibrant city like Boston, solo exploration often proves easier than traveling with a companion. You can check off major attractions like the Freedom Trail, the Museum of Fine Arts, the Public Garden, and Boston Common without the need to pause for discussions about next steps.
If you find that visiting all of Boston’s historical landmarks alone becomes repetitive after a day or two, consider booking a guided tour of the Freedom Trail, enjoying a hop-on hop-off trolley tour, or going on a whale-watching cruise. The Seaport District and Harvard’s campus are also two of my favorite spots to leisurely explore on a nice day.
3. Chicago
Urban getaways are naturally suited for solo travelers, and Chicago is no exception. The Windy City boasts an abundance of stunning architecture, top-notch museums, lush parks, and acclaimed restaurants—all perfect for exploring alone. If you want to avoid planning around Chicago’s infamous snowstorms and unpredictable weather, aim for a summer visit.
This timing offers plenty of chances to discover the beautiful lakefront neighborhoods, including Lincoln Park, Hyde Park, and The Loop. Summer also brings must-see outdoor activities like the Millennium Park Summer Music Series, boat tours on Lake Michigan, and firework displays at Navy Pier.
4. Atlanta
Since Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta Airport (ATL) is the busiest airport in the US, flights to Atlanta are often quite budget-friendly—though this can vary depending on your departure point. Feel free to indulge a bit more on your accommodations as a result.
Nothing quite compares to a solo stay in a five-star hotel, complete with room service, a hot shower, and a plush bathrobe. Atlanta boasts some of the most exquisite lodging options in the South. If you're in the mood for a touch of luxury, you can't go wrong with the Four Seasons Hotel Atlanta or The St. Regis Atlanta.
5. Salt Lake City
A haven for outdoor enthusiasts and snow lovers, Utah’s capital puts visitors right at the base of the Wasatch mountain range. If you plan to explore the nearby hiking trails and ski slopes, remember to follow best practices for solo travel, such as sharing your location with someone you trust. Salt Lake City also offers a variety of cultural attractions that cater to solo travelers, including the Natural History Museum of Utah, the Clark Planetarium, and The Leonardo Museum.
6. Tampa
Extroverted solo travelers and night owls should definitely consider adding Tampa to their travel plans. Nestled in the heart of Florida's Gulf Coast, Cigar City is a vibrant metropolis bursting with celebration, creativity, and cultural richness.
During the day, check out attractions like Busch Gardens Tampa Bay, Lowry Park Zoo, or Cypress Point Park. When night falls, head over to the Tampa Riverwalk. This secure area is perfect for solo adventurers wanting to enjoy Tampa’s nightlife or relax with cocktails while soaking in views of the city skyline and waterfront.
7. Philadelphia
Solo travel offers a unique sense of liberation, making Philadelphia—America’s birthplace of independence—the perfect backdrop for that experience. Having spent several years in this city, I can assure you that the City of Brotherly Love is brimming with activities and delicious dining options that are perfect for solo adventurers.
Be sure to stroll through Reading Terminal Market, and allocate some time for the Mütter Museum, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and the Rodin Museum. Comfortable walking shoes are a must, as many of Philly’s top tourist areas—like Center City, Rittenhouse Square, Washington Square West, and Old City—are best explored on foot.
8. Seattle
Ideal for those who can extend their stay, the Emerald City boasts a rich array of cultural, culinary, and outdoor activities. To make the most of your time, dedicate at least a day to museum hopping; highlights include the Museum of Pop Culture, the Seattle Art Museum, and the Museum of Flight.
The following morning, dive into Seattle's culinary scene, starting at Pike Place Market for some delicious bites. Before you head out, don’t miss the chance to paddle a Dinogo on Lake Union or explore the trails in Discovery Park. With such a packed itinerary, you won’t even notice you’re traveling solo.
9. Los Angeles
Los Angeles ranks high on many travelers' lists of top vacation destinations due to its sunny weather and beach access. It’s also perfect for solo adventures—whether you choose to bask by the pool, shop at The Grove, or hike in Runyon Canyon Park.
Keep in mind that Los Angeles is quite spread out, so your experience will differ depending on which neighborhood you choose to stay in and your planned activities. From my perspective, Downtown (DTLA) and Santa Monica are both very walkable and ideal for solo travelers.
10. New York City
When I relocated to New York City for my first post-college job, I spent every spare moment exploring the boroughs—often solo and on a budget. During that time, I learned that despite the high rents and property prices, NYC boasts excellent public transportation and numerous affordable cultural activities.
Budget-savvy solo travelers can enjoy strolls through Central Park, take a ride on the Staten Island ferry (with views of the Statue of Liberty), and visit the Metropolitan Museum of Art, which operates on a “pay what you want” admission basis. For museum enthusiasts, be sure to check out NYC’s top museums, many of which offer free entry on select days.
11. Denver
Much like Salt Lake City, Denver attracts solo adventurers, but you don't have to hit the trails alone. There are numerous groups, tours, and events designed to help travelers meet other visitors and locals. I recommend exploring BIPOC Mountain Collective on Facebook and Meetup.
It's also important to consider Denver's overall size. When I first visited the Mile-High City solo, I found its spread daunting. To mitigate that feeling, book a hotel downtown, where the area is more compact and very walkable.
12. Austin
Austin may not be known for its affordability—its cost of living is on the higher side—but solo travelers can still visit without overspending. To save money, try to avoid planning your trip during major events and festivals (like SXSW and Austin City Limits), as hotel prices can soar during these times.
13. San Francisco
San Francisco is a paradise for food lovers, even those exploring on their own. When dining solo, you can indulge in exactly what you want without compromise. If you’re in the mood for something sweet, treat yourself to Ghirardelli’s Hot Fudge Sundae.
For those craving James Beard award-winning dishes—if you're fortunate enough to secure a reservation—the culinary team at State Bird Provisions will leave a lasting impression. And if you're seeking a cozy spot to enjoy a glass of wine with a good book, Cultivar is the place to go.
14. Dallas
Dallas boasts one of the most overlooked art scenes in the United States, featuring a variety of museums and galleries perfect for solo exploration. Many of these cultural gems are conveniently located close to each other. If possible, book a hotel near the Dallas Art District (DAD), the largest contiguous urban arts area in the country.
Here, you can easily visit the Dallas Museum of Art, the Nasher Sculpture Center, the Crow Museum of Asian Art, and the Meyerson Symphony Center. Additionally, checking DAD’s website can help you discover exciting events and programs that coincide with your travel dates.
15. Houston
Houston, Texas completes Dinogo and Open Table’s list of top solo travel destinations in the US. Like many large cities, safety can be a concern at night; however, solo travelers generally find it safe to explore Space City’s attractions and downtown areas.
Popular activities include paddling along the Buffalo Bayou Waterway, visiting the Houston Graffiti Building, enjoying a show at the Miller Outdoor Theatre, and hiking through the Houston Arboretum and Nature Center. Houston’s culinary scene is also highly praised—don't miss Villa Arcos for breakfast tacos and Henderson & Kane General Store for Texas barbecue and a unique selection of groceries.
