The 16 Finest Hotels in London
My early visits to London often meant crashing on friends' sofas and sharing beds. Fast forward twelve years and a decade of travel writing later, my trips to the city typically start and end with stays at some of the most esteemed hotels in Mayfair, Knightsbridge, Covent Garden, and more.
Given my background and knowledge of the city, I frequently receive inquiries about where to stay. While recommendations vary by budget and area, I’ve noticed that the best hotels generally fall into two categories: classic London establishments, such as The Savoy or Claridge’s, and newer venues that embrace innovative design for a refreshing yet equally delightful experience.
Regardless of their history, top hotels in the city don’t rest on their laurels. They continuously innovate, renovate, and pursue a distinctive level of excellence that helps them compete with other award-winning establishments. This list highlights the very best, compiled from our firsthand experiences at editor-favorite spots and both past and present recipients of T+L’s World’s Best and It List accolades. Keep reading to explore the top hotels in London for 2024.

The Savoy
The SavoyWith its prime location along the River Thames, The Savoy offers guests stunning views of the London Eye and the bustling waterway.
The fitness center can feel a bit cramped when more than three or four guests are present.
There are hotels in London, and then there are the British legends. I must admit I wasn't fully aware of The Savoy's rich history and prestige before my visit in January 2024, but the exceptional service, meticulous attention to detail, and stunning river views captivated me within moments of arrival. Despite being a long-standing figure in the city's hospitality landscape, The Savoy — which earned top ratings in the 2023 World’s Best Awards — remains vibrant and engaging. Its unique character is enhanced by the presence of Gordon Ramsay’s renowned restaurant, the Savoy Grill; collaborations with Gucci; and surprisingly modern features, including an indoor pool and Dyson hair dryers.
No discussion of the hotel would be complete without mentioning The American Bar (the oldest cocktail bar in London) and the iconic Red Lift. After checking in, the bellman escorted me to my fourth-floor room using this historic elevator, known as London’s first electric lift.

Nestled on Albemarle Street near the lively Piccadilly, this property pleasantly surprises guests with its charm. During your visit, you might hear stories about the hotel’s illustrious guests, including literary giants like Stephen King, Mark Twain, Agatha Christie, and Rudyard Kipling. Important Information Before You Arrive
Tipping is not mandatory
In London, unlike in the United States, tipping is not compulsory. However, if you receive exceptional service, leaving a tip of 10 to 15 percent is always appreciated. It's advisable to have some cash on hand to tip bellhops or doormen a couple of pounds for their assistance with your luggage or car.
Keep in mind that traffic drives on the left
Even if you’re not planning to rent a car during your visit, it's crucial to grasp the local traffic patterns and navigation. In London, for example, extra caution is needed when crossing streets. Fortunately, many busy crosswalks have signs reminding you to “look left” or “look right.”
Remember to bring your umbrella
London is infamous for its unpredictable rain. Sudden showers can occur at any time throughout the year, so it’s wise to be prepared. A bulky raincoat might be overkill, but having a travel-sized umbrella handy in your jacket or bag will be beneficial. Ensure your footwear can withstand a little moisture, especially if you plan on walking around.
Familiarize yourself with London’s diverse neighborhoods
London is a vast city comprising 32 boroughs, each divided into various neighborhoods. If you prefer a hotel in a central area, consider options in Soho, Covent Garden, Mayfair, Marylebone, Westminster, Southwark, or the City of London. The farther you stay from Central London, the more time you might spend on buses or the tube. Additionally, you'll often hear locals refer to locations in relation to the Thames — either north or south of the river.
